Emission means a direct or indirect release of pollutant into the ambient air. There are four major air pollutants - particular matters (PM), sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon monoxide (CO).

Air pollutants are emitted either from stationary sources (production and distribution of electricity, steam and hot water, local heating plants, industrial technological processes, extraction and transport of fossil fuels, landfills and waste treatment, agriculture production, other stationary sources) or from mobile sources (road transport, other mobile sources).
