Definition

The mid-year population reflects the population at the midpoint of the reference period. It is expressed as:

(a) the mid-year population on 1 July, obtained by means of the demographic balancing method

Or

 (b) the arithmetic mean of the beginning and end stocks of the populations in the reference period

a) The number of population on January + the number of live births from 1 January to 30 June - the number of deaths from 1 January to 30 June + the number of immigrants from 1 January to 30 June - the number of emigrants from 1 January to 30 June = the number of population on 1 July

Until 2010, data on the mid-year population had been processed by means of the demographic balancing method as of 1 July of the reference year. The change results from the practice in the European area.
