Definition

Determination of the size of the population in the intercensal period, i.e. between two subsequent population censuses. It is based on the population census and on routine records of the population change (i.e. the numbers of live births, deaths, immigrants and emigrants). Population balances include also various structures (e.g. country of birth, nationality, citizenship, marital status, age, education, human development index). Census results are the basic data that serve for balancing the population data in the intercensal period.

Method of calculation

Population balance (determination of the number of inhabitants at the end of the reference period):
Population at the end of the reference period = the number of population at the beginning of the reference period + the number of live births in the reference period – the number of deaths in the reference period + the number of immigrants in the reference period – the number of emigrants in the reference period

For example:

Population balance by year of birth (determination of the number of inhabitants in completed years of age on 31 December of a given year):
Population on 31 December of a given year by year of birth = population on 1 January of a given year by year of birth + the number of live births in a given year – the number of deaths in a given year by year of birth + the number of immigrants in a given year by year of birth – the number of emigrants in a given year by year of birth

Population balance by nationality (determination of the number of inhabitants of a given nationality on 31 December of a given year):
Population on 31 December of a given year by nationality = population on 1 January of a given year by nationality + number of live births in a given year by nationality - number of deaths in a given year by nationality + number of immigrants in a given year by nationality - number of emigrants in a given year by nationality
