The Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic (SOSR) is the central body of the state administration for the field of state statistics. Its status and tasks are governed by Act No. 575/2001 Coll. on the Organization of Activity of the Government and the Organization of the Central State Administration, Act No. 540/2001 Coll. on state statistics, Act No. 272/2015 Coll. on the Register of Legal Entities, Entrepreneurs and Public Authorities as amended, Act No. 223/2019 Coll. on the 2021 Population and Housing Census as amended and Act No. 180/2014 Coll. on the conditions for the exercise of the right to vote as amended. Since January 1, 1993, with the establishment of the Slovak Republic, it has been functioning as an independent institution.

Structure and management

• Management: The Statistical Office of the SR is headed by the President, who is appointed and dismissed by the Government of the SR for a five-year term. In his/her absence, the President of the Office shall be deputized by the Vice-President of the Office to the extent of his/her rights and obligations.
• Coordination Council: The Coordination Council for State Statistics is established at the Office, which coordinates the performance of tasks in the field of state statistics by other bodies performing state statistics. The Chairperson of the Coordination Council is the President of the Office, the members are representatives of all bodies performing state statistics.

Scope and activities

Act No. 540/2001 Coll. on state statistics regulates the development, production and dissemination of state statistics in accordance with the needs of its users and with the obligations arising from international treaties to which the Slovak Republic is bound. It establishes the rights and obligations of the reporting units, the protection of confidential data and other aspects of the functioning of state statistics.

The main tasks of the SOSR:

• drawing up the Programme of state statistical surveys.
• determining the methodology of state statistical surveys and statistical data processing.
• management of the system of national accounts and compilation of national accounts.
• creation, administration and publication of statistical classifications and code lists.
• administration of statistical registers.
• cooperation with international organizations in the field of statistics.
• publishing the results of state statistical surveys and providing statistical information.
• preparation of the processing and processing of election and referendum results.
• management of the Register of legal entities, entrepreneurs and public authorities, including the allocation of organization identification numbers.

Regional offices

In addition to the Central Office in Bratislava, the Statistical Office of the SR also has seven regional offices with seats in Trnava, Nitra, Trenčín, Žilina, Banská Bystrica, Košice and Prešov.
