Official statistics - a window for understanding society
Official statistics play an important role in the development of public policies and decisions. They provide accurate and reliable data that help companies react to the current challenges and to plan for the future. This year's European Statistics Day, celebrated by the statistical community on 20 October, emphasizes that accurate and reliable statistics must reflect technological progress while maintaining credibility and accessibility for citizens.
European Statistics Day is an annual celebration and a reminder of the importance of official statistics as a tool that provides a deep and reliable insight into the social and economic processes of a country for all producers and users of statistics. In an increasingly complex technological and social world, they are of fundamental importance for the creation of public policies and decisions shaping the future of society.
Modern technologies and the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) represent new challenges, but also opportunities, for the statistical system. They enable not only to introduce new processes and thus reduce the administrative burden, but also to respond more promptly to the new trends and requests of users of statistics, primarily by using new types of data and resources. "Official statistics are thus much closer to citizens than ever before. It is therefore important to continue to strengthen their interest and ability to use statistical data correctly. Above all, in the digital era, in which any data faces challenges such as data protection, privacy or cyber security," Martin Nemky, the President of the Statistical Office of the SR, emphasized on the occasion of the European Statistics Day. He pointed out that "official statistics are not just dry numbers, but a key through which citizens - managers, entrepreneurs, analysts and all users of statistics - can better understand the current social processes and obtain the facts necessary for their decision-making."
The Statistical Office of the SR prepared a series of dissemination and communication activities on the occasion of the European Statistics Day. As a part of that, it offers the public interesting data on selected topics, which it will gradually publish during October.
