On Tuesday, October 20, 2020, the world commemorates the World Statistics Day (WSD) with the current message "Connecting the world with data we can trust".
World Statistics Day 2020 aims to raise awareness among the lay and professional public around the world about the value and importance of official statistics produced by the statistical institutions. At the same time, it is an opportunity to highlight the benefits of official statistics as a credible source of information on the socio-economic developments for the decisions made by politicians, enterprises and citizens in today's rapidly changing world with many information channels.
As the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Gutteres noted „the unprecedented Coronavirus pandemic has elevated the importance of data and statistics, and demonstrated how linking data with the geospatial information can help us to track the dynamics of a rapidly changing global situation.“
World Statistics Day is commemorated every five years pursuant to the decision of the UN Statistical Division, other years the European Statistics Day is commemorated.
The Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic supports World Statistics Day with several activities:
- Publication of the informative-promotional publication SLOVAK REPUBLIC IN FIGURES 2020 (pdf - 1 MB), which shows through visualization 130 selected indicators on economic, social and demographic development in Slovakia.
- Press release on the activity: New publication of the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic includes the latest key indicators for Slovakia in the last 10 years.
- At the same time, the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic will publish in the near future the Slovak version of the digital publication Eurostat Key Figures on Europe focused on the living conditions, health, working life, income and expenditure, business, prices, environment, transport, energy and others.
