More than 700 employees of the Statistical Office of the SR will ensure the summarization of the fifth European electionsl

The Statistical Office of the SR will electronically summarize the results of the elections to the European Parliament through 50 professional summarizing units. The definitive results will be published transparently, clearly and comprehensively on the election portal on Sunday, June 9 after 11 p.m.

The Statistical Office of the SR (SOSR) consistently carried out all preparatory activities for a quick and objective summarization of the results of the 2024 elections to the European Parliament. As part of the preparation, the Office carried out 3 successful tests of the processing of the election results. They confirmed the functionality and reliability of the Integrated Election Information System (IVIS), which is the main tool for summarizing the results of all elections in the SR.

"The Statistical Office of the SR carried out hundreds of activities as part of several months of preparations for the 2024 European Parliament elections. We are ready to process the European elections reliably, safely, transparently and in accordance with the applicable legislation," said Martin Nemky, the President of the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic.

IVIS will help the electoral commissions in summarizing the results, in which the results from all 5 930 polling stations and also the minutes of 49 district electoral commissions will be processed electronically. During the election night from Saturday, June 8 to Sunday, June 9, 2024, more than 700 employees will work at the regional offices of the Statistical Office of the SR, using 571 computers and 347 printers.

Electoral infrastructure

The Statistical Office will summarize the results of the European elections in the SR after the closing of the polling stations, i.e. from Saturday 8 June 2024 to Sunday 9 June 2024. The summarization will be carried out through 50 professional summarizing units. For the needs of the elections, the Office established 49 summarizing workplaces operating at district election commissions throughout the SR. One summarizing unit is created for the State Commission on Elections and Control of Financing of Political Parties at the Central Office in Bratislava. Voting results from almost 6 000 electoral districts are processed in the summarizing units.

The personnel and technical capacities of individual workplaces are arranged according how many electoral districts´ records need to be processed in a given region (territorial district). The summarizing workplace in Bratislava processes the majority of minutes from 352 districts. Minutes from more than 200 districts are summarized by workplaces in Prešov (231), Žilina (219), Rimavská Sobota (217) and Nitra (211). On the contrary, the fewest minutes, from less than 60 districts, are processed in the offices of the Statistical Office of the SR in Ružomberok (59), Malacky (58), Pezinok (55), Stropkov (52), Dolny Kubín (43) and Šala (42).

The SOSR will only publish the overall voting results

During the European elections, in accordance with the Slovak and European legislation, it is not possible to provide interim results, the moratorium applies until the closing of the last polling station in the territory of all EU member states.

"While there are still elections in several EU states on Sunday, we in Slovakia will already have the results summarized in a definitive form. Therefore, at the earliest convenient date, on Sunday after 11 p.m., we will publish the definitive results for the Slovak Republic in detailed structures," said Martin Nemky, the President of the Statistical Office of the SR. The Statistical office always publishes the definitive results only after approval by the State Commission on Elections and Control of Financing of Political Parties.

The definitive election results will be published on the SOSR´s website volbysr.sk up to the level of 5 930 electoral districts, with the possibility of downloading them in various formats (xlsx, ods and csv). The election portal of the Statistical Office of the SR is the only official source of the results of all types of elections held in the SR, including the results of the elections to the European Parliament. Four European elections have been held in Slovakia so far, the first one in 2004.

Previous European elections

Slovak citizens elect their representatives to the European Parliament for the fifth time. They were held for the first time in 2004, when Slovakia joined the European Union. Participation in the European elections in Slovakia has long been the lowest in the EU. So far, from the results of the Statistical office, it follows that the largest voter turnout in the EU elections in the SR was in 2019, when almost 1 million people went to the ballot boxes representing only 22.74% of eligible voters. The second highest turnout was in 2009, when 19.64% of eligible voters voted, which was over 800 000 people. The lowest turnout was in 2014, when only 13.05% of eligible voters (561 thousand) chose their representatives as members of the European Parliament.
