Development of consumer prices in January 2019

In January 2019 compared with December 2018, consumer prices increased by 1,1 % in total.  Prices rose in the divisions of food and non-alcoholic beverages by 3 %; housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels by 1,8 %; alcoholic beverages and tobacco by 1,3 %; miscellaneous goods and services by 1 %; recreation and culture by 0,6 %; health by 0,5 %; restaurants and hotels by 0,2 %. Prices dropped in the division of clothing and footwear by 2 %; transport; communications equally by 0,3 %; furniture and furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance by 0,1 %. Prices in education were at the same level.

Higher prices of food by 3 % were affected by rise in prices of fruit by 11 %; vegetables (including potatoes) by 5,4 %; bread and cereals by 4,2 %; sugar, jam, honey, syrups, chocolates and confectionary by 3,2 %; oils and fats by 2,6 %; food products n.e.c. by 2,1 %; milk, cheese and eggs by 1,9 %; fish by 0,9 %; meat by 0,4 %. Prices of non-alcoholic beverages increased by 2,9 % (prices of mineral water, soft drinks, fruit and vegetable juices increased by 5,3 %, prices of coffee, tea and cocoa decreased by 0,2 %).

Higher prices of fruit were affected by price increase of bananas by 25,5 %, table grapes by 16,8 %, tangerines by 12,4 %, oranges by 4,6 %, apples by 0,6 %, lemons by 0,3 %. Prices of kiwi dropped by 6,2 %. Higher prices of vegetables were affected by an increase of prices of onions by 20,8 %, cauliflower by 13,6 %, tomatoes by 12,6 %, pepper by 12,2 %, carrots by 4,1 %, potatoes by 3,8 %, parsley by 3,6 %, white cabbage by 2,1 %, garlic by 1,1 %. Prices of cucumber decreased by 13 % and celery by 2,6 %. Price increase of meat was affected by higher prices of pork meat by 0,8 %. Prices of poultry did not change.

Higher prices in the division of alcoholic beverages and tobacco were affected by an increase in prices of alcoholic beverages by 2,5 % (prices of wine by 2,9 %, beer by 2,6 %, spirits by 2 %). Prices of tobacco did not change.

Lower prices in the division of clothing and footwear were affected by a decrease in prices of footwear by 2,5 %; clothing by 1,8 %.

Price increase in the division of housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels was affected by higher prices of electricity by 6,7 %; heat energy by 6,1 %; sewage collection by 1,8 %; services for maintenance and repair of the dwelling by 1,3 %; solid fuels by 0,8 %; materials for regular maintenance and repair of the dwelling; other services related to the dwelling equally by 0,4 %; actual rentals paid by tenants; sewage collection equally by 0,2 %; imputed rentals of owner-occupiers by 0,1 %. Prices of water supply and gas remained at the level of December. 

Price decrease in the division of furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance was affected by lower prices of goods and services for routine household maintenance by 0,8 %; furniture and furnishings, carpets and other floor coverings by 0,1 %. Prices of tools and equipment for house and garden increased by 0,9 %; household textiles; household appliances equally by 0,4 %; glassware, tableware and household utensils by 0,2 %.

Higher prices in the division of health were the result of the price increase of medical products, appliances and equipment by 0,5 % (prices of pharmaceutical products increased by 0,6 %, of other medical products by 0,4 %, prices of therapeutic appliances and equipment decreased by 0,2 %) outpatient services by 0,3 % (dental services by 0,4 %, paramedical services by 0,3 %, prices of medical services remained unchanged); hospital services by 0,2 %.

Lower prices in transport were due to a price decrease in operation of personal transport equipment by 0,9 % (prices of fuels and lubricants for personal transport decreased by 1,6 %, prices of spare parts and accessories increased by 3,4 %, maintenance and repair by 1 %, other services related to the means of personal transport by 0,7 %). Prices of transport service activities increased by 0,3 % (passenger transport by air by 3,5 %, other purchased transport services by 0,2 %), prices of road passenger transport remained unchanged); purchase of transport equipment by 0,1 % (new motor vehicles by 0,2 %).

A price decrease in the division of communication was caused by lower prices of telephone equipment by 1,3 %; telephone services by 0,3 % (prices of internet services decreased by 2,1 %, prices of package telecommunication services increased by 1,4 %). Prices of postal services remained unchanged.

Price increase in the division of recreation and culture was due to higher prices of pre-arranged holiday packages by 1,6 %; newspapers, books and stationery by 0,9 %; other recreational items and equipment for gardens and pets, recreational and cultural services equally by 0,4 %; other major durables for recreation and culture-musical instruments by 0,1 %. Prices of audio-visual and photographic equipment decreased by 0,3 %.

In the division of education, prices of pre-primary, primary; secondary; tertiary education; education not definable by the level were at the level of the last month.

Increasing prices in the division of restaurants and hotels were affected by higher prices of accommodation services by 0,3 %; catering services by 0,2 % (prices increased in restaurants, cafes, payment for meals in canteens of pensioners equally by 0,8 %, prices in canteens decreased by 1,2 % due to lower prices of meals in kindergartens by 19,8 %).

Price increase in the division of miscellaneous goods and services was caused by higher prices of insurance by 6,1 % (compulsory motor vehicle liability insurance by 11 %, accident automobile insurance by 6,5 %, insurance related to housing by 0,1 %); social protection by 0,8 % (payment for social services by 0,9 %, payment for care service and day-care equally by 0,3 %, payment in private creches by 0,1 %); personal care; financial services n.e.c. equally by 0,7 % (financial services provided by banks by 0,8 %); other services n.e.c. by 0,3 %. Prices of personal effects n.e.c. remained unchanged.

In January 2019 compared with January 2018, consumer prices increased by 2,2 % in total. Prices increased in the divisions of housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels by 4,3 %; miscellaneous goods and services by 3,8 %; restaurants and hotels by 3,5 %; alcoholic beverages and tobacco by 2,1 %; health by 1,8 %; clothing and footwear, furnishings, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house equally by 1,7 %; food and non-alcoholic beverages by 1,6 %; education by 0,9 %; communications by 0,8 %; recreation and culture by 0,7 %. Prices of transport decreased by 1,8 %.

In January 2019 compared with December 2018, index of consumer prices increased in households of employees by 1 %, in households of pensioners by 1,3 %  and in low-income households by 1,2 %.

In January 2019, index of consumer prices increased, year-on-year, in households of employees by 2,2 %, in households of pensioners by 2,5 %, in low-income households by 2,3 %.
