The number of visitors to hotels and boarding houses grew by almost 17% year-on-year in September, but it was still a quarter lower than before the pandemic

The overall year-on-year increase was mainly affected by higher number of foreign guests, who accounted for more than 26 % of the total number of visitors in September 2021. Although this was the highest share since the beginning of the pandemic period, their numbers are still low, less than half of the pre-pandemic period (September 2019).

In September 2021, almost 441 thousand people visited tourist accommodation establishments in Slovakia; the number of guests increased by 16.6 % year-on-year. It was recorded by 45 % more foreigners than last year and by 9 % more domestic tourists. However, last year under the influence of the pandemic was lower than the previous years. The number of guests thus reached only three quarters of the values compared to the pre-pandemic period (to September 2019).

The number of overnight stays increased by 6.8 % year-on-year. While guests spent almost 1.2 million nights in tourist accommodation establishments in September this year, it was recorded 1.5 million nights in September 2019.

The total number of visitors grew year-on-year in all regions except of Nitriansky kraj, but the highest year-on-year increase was recorded in Bratislavský kraj. However, it is a region that has recorded the highest declines among the eight regions of the SR compared to the number of visitors in 2019. Compared to September two years ago, it is still only about half of he number of visitors. The most tourists visited the important touristic regions Žilinský kraj and Prešovský kraj, followed by the aforementioned Bratislavský kraj.

Domestic tourists (325 thousand people) accounted for 73.8 % of visitors in hotels, boarding houses and other accommodation establishments during September. As in the total number of visitors, the number of domestic visitors rose in all regions except of Nitriansky kraj. Compared to the values of 2019, the number of September´s visitors was exceeded only in one region, in Žilinský kraj.  Trnavský kraj and Prešovský kraj achieved approximately the same values of domestic guests as two years ago. In other regions, the number of domestic visitors decreased by 3 to 23 % in a two-year comparison.

The most visited districts were Poprad, Bratislava 1 and Liptovský Mikuláš. These three districts accounted for one-third of the total number of September´s visitors to the Slovak Republic.

Accommodation services were used by 116 thousand foreigners and represented 26.2 % of the total number of visitors in September. This is the highest value since the last spring, when a pandemic hit the industry. In September 2019, foreigners represented up to 40 % of visitors. In all regions except of Nitriansky kraj, there were recorded high year-on-year increases in the number of foreigners, from 12 to 117 %. However, in comparison with 2019, foreign visitors still accounted for only about half of the number of September´s visitors to individual regions. Bratislavský kraj reached the highest number of foreign guests and the highest year-on-year increase, followed by the Prešovský kraj and Žilinský kraj. The most foreign visitors used accommodation establishments in the district of Bratislava 1, Poprad, Bratislava 2 and Liptovský Mikuláš.

In total, from January to September 2021, 2.24 million visitors were accommodated in tourism establishments, there was a year-on-year decrease of 24.2 %. Compared to the same period before the pandemic, the total number of guests was lower by 55 %, while the most significant decline of 78 % was recorded by foreigners.

Quarterly data: Development of the capacity of accommodation establishments

At the end of the third quarter, 4,599 accommodation establishments in Slovakia provided accommodation services. There were 73 thousand rooms with 185.8 thousand beds (of which 174.6 thousand permanent beds). The net occupancyy rate of permanent beds represented 35.6 %, and the occupancy rate of rooms accounted for 40.2 % in the third quarter.
