Crop production in 2025 was remarkably successful, with favourable results for cereals, oilseeds and potatoes.
For the Slovak farmers, 2025 was favourable in terms of the most widely grown crops. Production of wheat, grain maize, rapeseed and potatoes increased significantly year-on-year. Above-average production for most crops was supported not only by an increase in harvested area, but mainly by higher yield per hectare, which increased significantly both year-on-year and compared to the five-year average.
Total production of wheat in Slovakia reached almost 2.3 million tonnes in 2025, which was about one-fifth higher than in 2024. The increase in production by 380 thousand tonnes was mainly due to a year-on-year expansion of harvested area by 9% and a higher yield per hectare by almost 10%. The yield of wheat reached 6 tonnes per hectare (year-on-year +0.5 tonnes). Wheat is the most widely grown crop in Slovakia, representing more than half of the cereal area1).
The Statistical Office of the SR disseminates the latest final data on crop production of and the its overall balance through the new statistical product “Crop production in 2025 – final data”, which has been included in the Release Calendar.
An increase in crop production in 2025 was also recorded for grain maize, with producers harvesting a total of 1.3 million tonnes. Production was higher year-on-year by as much as 22% and exceeded the average of the previous five years2) by almost 7%. Production was affected by a 7% year-on-year increase in harvested area and a 14% higher yield per hectare. Farmers harvested an average of 8.2 tonnes of maize per hectare, about one-fifth more than the average of the previous five years.
Total production of rapeseed (winter and spring combined) exceeded 457 thousand tonnes, with production increasing year-on-year by 17.5%. Despite a nearly 10% drop in the harvested area compared to the previous year, productivity improved significantly, with yields per hectare growing by 30%. The yield reached 3.6 tonnes per hectare, representing an increase of almost 1 tonne year-on-year. Similarly, the average yield of rapeseed was 13% higher than the average of the previous five years. Rapeseed is the most widely grown oilseed crop in Slovakia, representing almost half of the harvested area of all oilseed crops3).
Total production of potatoes reached almost 200 thousand tonnes in 2025. Production was more than 15% higher year-on-year and exceeded the average of the previous five years by as much as 30%2). The increase in production was affected by a nearly 6% year-on-year increase in harvested area and a 9% higher yield per hectare. On average, farmers harvested 31 tonnes of potatoes per hectare, which is about one-fifth higher than the average of the previous five years.
A decrease in production in 2025 was recorded for sugar beet, with total production reaching 1.2 million tonnes. Production was 12% lower year-on-year and 7% lower compared to the average of the previous five years2). Despite higher yields per hectare of 67 tonnes (year-on-year +8 tonnes), production was negatively affected by a decrease in harvested area of as much as 23%.
Production of vegetables reached 172 thousand tonnes. Total production increased year-on-year by almost 23% and exceeded the average of the previous five years by 25%2). Production was affected by a 17% year-on-year increase in harvested area and an almost 5% higher yield per hectare. The average yield of vegetables reached 4.6 tonnes per hectare, which was almost 10% lower than the average of the previous five years.
In 2025, tomato production recorded favorable results, reaching almost 21 thousand tonnes. Despite a 7% decrease in harvested area, total production increased year-on-year by 16% and the average yield per hectare by almost 26%. By contrast, lower production was recorded for peppers. Total production reached almost 2 thousand tonnes, representing a decrease of more than 12% year-on-year. This unfavourable development was mainly due to a reduction in harvested area by as much as 26%.
From 2026 onwards, the Statistical Office of the SR will regularly disseminate the statistical product “Crop production– final data”. It will provide final data on total production, harvested area and yields of crops for the calendar year. The data are disseminated in the form of tables in the public statistical database DATAcube..The product also includes a brief analysis of developments in the form of a news release, which is available in the Information reports catalogue upon dissemination. The product has become a permanent part of the Release Calendar.
The new statistical product follows on from the statistical publication “Crop production of in the SR”, which had been compiled and disseminated until 2025. The publications are available in the Publications Catalogue, for example:
