Turnover in internal trade in March 2020

In March, the development of turnover in internal trade was affected by the emergency situation declared by the government in connection with the COVID 19 outbreak. Turnover mostly increased in retail trade in non-specialized stores, mainly as a result of higher turnover in sale of food, beverages and tobacco and printing. On the contrary, a negative impact was in accommodation and in sale and repair of motor vehicles.

Turnover in internal trade increased only in wholesale by 0,5 % month-on-month. It significantly decreased in other service activities compared with the previous month, it fell in accommodation by 50,5 %, sale and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles by 29,1 % and in food and beverage service activities by 28,7 %. The slightest decrease was in retail trade by 7,8 %.

Development in March 2020 compared with March 2019

Compared with March 2019, turnover in sale and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles decreased by 33,5 %. The total decrease was affected by lower turnover in all activities, mostly in sale of motor vehicles, there was a turnover fall by 40,6 %. Turnover also decreased in sale of parts and accessories of motor vehicles by 13,9 % and in repair and maintenance of motor vehicles by 0,5 % year-on-year .

Only turnover in wholesale reported a positive numbers, compared with March 2019, it rose by 7,9 % in total. The most significant increase was recorded in non-specialized wholesale by 19,6 %, wholesale of household goods by 15,5 %, wholesale on a fee or contract basis by 17,1 %. Turnover also increased considerably in wholesale of agricultural raw materials and live animals by 28,7 %, a rise was registered for the first time in this year. Turnover dropped only in other specialized wholesale and in wholesale of ICT.

After a growth in the previous month, turnover in retail trade again decreased by 3,6 % year-on-year. A fall was recorded almost in all activities, of which the most significant one in retail trade of other household goods in specialized stores by 27,4 % and in retail trade of other goods in specialized stores by 12,8 %. Turnover increased only in retail trade in non-specialized stores by 12,9 % year-on-year.

Turnover in accommodation decreased by 50,8 % in comparison with the corresponding period last year.

A considerable decrease was also recorded in food and beverage service activities,  compared with March  2019, turnover decreased by 21,5 %.

Development over the first three months of 2020 compared with the corresponding period of 2019

A decline was also reflected in the development of turnover for the first three months of 2020. Turnover in sale and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles decreased by 15,3 % due to a decrease in  sale of motor vehicles by 19,9 % and in sale of parts and accessories by 3,1 %. Turnover in repair and maintenance of motor vehicles increased by 5,5 % compared with the corresponding period last year.

Total turnover in wholesale increased by 4,5 % as a result of higher turnover mostly in non-specialized wholesale by 10,7 % and in wholesale on a fee or contract basis by 13,2 %. Lower turnover were recorded in three activities, it dropped most considerably in other specialized wholesale by 1,2 %.

Turnover in retail trade decreased by 0,3 %, a fall was almost in all activities, most significantly in retail trade not in stores, stalls or markets by 5,8 %, retail trade of other goods in specialized stores by 3,5 % and in retail trade of other household goods in specialized stores by 6,5 %. Turnover increased only in retail trade in non-specialized stores by 7,2 %.

Turnover in accommodation decreased by 13,8 %.

Turnover in food and beverage service activities rose by 5,1 %.
