Turnover in selected sectors of economy in June 2020

In June, a decline in turnover slowed down in all sectors except construction, exceeding 10 % in construction, services and transportation.

Turnover in most sectors of the economy have not yet reached the last year's level, but the decline slowed in June. Industry was the most successful, where turnover decreased by only 3,2 % year-on-year in June, after a 34,5 % drop in May. The development in construction was less favourable, a decrease in turnover deepened to 15,1 %.

In June, as regards the more similar activities of individual sectors, the largest decline in turnover was in travel agencies and tour operators activities, which reached only one-sixth of the volume of turnover from the same period last year (a decrease of 84,9 %). The situation improved in car industry; after kick-starting of production, turnover in manufacture of transport equipment reached almost the level of June 2019, year-on-year they were only by 0,9 % lower (compared to a 54 % slump in May).

The recovery in industry was reflected in the positive month-on-month development of turnover, which increased by almost a third (by 30,7 %) compared to May. Turnover also increased significantly in transportation and storage by 12 %, and also grew in selected market services by 3 % and in information and communication by 0,7 %. Month-on-month, only turnover in construction decreased by 4,1 %.

Development in June 2020 compared to June 2019

The development in industry is slowly stabilizing, a decline in turnover slowed down significantly, reaching 3,2 % in June, while in May there was a 34,5 % decrease.

In most sectors of industry, turnover continued to decrease, but it is much lower than in previous months. The production of manufacture of transport equipment kick-started, where sales in June were only by 0,9 % lower year-on-year compared to a 54 % fall in May. In general, the situation was affected by a continuing decrease in turnover, especially in manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products by 9,1 %, electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply by 8,5 %, manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. by 9,2 %, manufacture of rubber and plastic products and non-metallic mineral products by 6 % and in other manufacture, repair and installation of machinery and equipment by 10,8 %.

The overall favourable development was supported by a year-on-year higher turnover in manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products by 34 % (impact of last year's shutdown of one of the producers), in food, beverages and tobacco products by 8,6 %, in manufacture of chemicals and chemical products by 11 % , manufacture of pharmaceutical products and preparations by 15,6 % and in manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products by 0,2 %.

A decrease in turnover in construction continued, compared to June 2019, it decreased by 15,1 %.

A decrease in turnover slowed to 11,7 %  in transportation and storage 2) in June, compared to a 27 % decrease in May. Turnover dropped in almost all activities, most notably in warehousing and support activities for transportation by 13,8 % and in land transport and transport via pipelines by 9,5 %. Turnover increased only in postal and courier service activities by 15,1 %.

For the second month in a row, turnover also decreased in information and communication 3), compared to June 2019, it fell by 4,1 %. The total decrease was mainly influenced by lower turnover in information service activities by 22 % and in telecommunications by 5,1 %. Turnover continued to grow in computer programming by 3,2 %, and turnover also increased in publishing activities year-on-year.

In selected market services 4), turnover was lower by 12 % year-on-year. It decreased the most in travel agencies and tour operators activities, with a year-on-year 84,9 % decline, it reached only one-sixth of the volume of turnover from the same period last year (in May there was a 80,5 % fall). Turnover also decreased significantly in architectural and engineering activities, falling by 19,9 % ​​year-on-year. Only turnover increased in gaming and betting activities, real estate activities and in administrative, office support and other business support activities.

Development for the first half of 2020 compared to the same period of 2019

In the first half of 2020, turnover decreased by 18,5 % in industry year-on-year. The development by SK sections of NACE Rev. 2 was affected by a fall in manufacturing by 19,9 %, electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply by 9,9 %, mining and quarrying by 4,9 % and water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities by 2,1 %.

Since the beginning of the year, turnover decreased in manufacture of transport equipment by 28,6 %, manufacture of metals and fabricated metal products except machinery and equipment by 17,1 %, electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply by 9,9 %, manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products by 24,2 % and manufacture of rubber and plastic products and other non-metallic mineral products by 14,3 %. Year-on-year, turnover increased only in manufacture of chemicals and chemical products by 3,7 %, manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations by 8,3 % and in manufacture of food products, beverages and tobacco products by 0,3 %.

Turnover decreased by 7,9 %  in construction in the first half of the year compared to the same period of 2019.

Turnover decreased by 12,9 %  in transportation and storage year-on-year, mainly due to lower turnover in warehousing and support activities for transportation by 18,9 % and in land transport and transport via pipelines by 10,2 %. Turnover increased only in postal and courier service activities by 7,8 %.

The total turnover increased by 2,1 % in  information and communication due to a growth in computer programming by 10,8 %. In other service activities, turnover decreased year-on-year.

In selected market services, turnover decreased by 6,2 %. It dropped the most in travel agencies and tour operators activities by 42,6 % and in gaming and betting activities by 4,9 %. Turnover increased only in real estate activities by 8,6 %.
