Employment and average monthly wage in selected sectors of economy in June 2020

In June, employment fell in almost all sectors, with the exception of ICT activities, in which, as the only selected activity, employment is growing continuously in a long-term. The development of wage was more favourable, while in May the average nominal monthly wage increased year-on-year only in retail trade, in June half of the sectors recorded a growth.

Employment

The decline in employment from previous months also continued in June 2020. As in April and May, employment increased only in information and communication, in June 2020 compared to June 2019, it increased by 5,2 %. It decreased in accommodation by 181 %, food and beverage service activities by 13,4 %, construction by 7,8 %, industry by 6,3 %, wholesale and retail trade equally by 4,6 %, sale and repair motor vehicles by 3,9 %, selected market services by 3,6 % and in transportation and storage by 0,9 %.

On average in the first half of 2020, compared to the same period of 2019, employment in information and communication increased by 5,1 % and in transportation  and storage by 0,1 %. It decreased in accommodation by 6,6 %, food and beverage service activities by 5,8 %, industry by 4,8 %, retail trade by 3,8 %, construction by 3,6 %, wholesale by 2,6 %, sale and repair of motor vehicles by 2 % and in selected market services by 1,3 %.

Average nominal monthly wage

While in May the average nominal monthly wage increased year-on-year only in retail trade, in June half of the sector recorded a growth. In June 2020, compared to June 2019, it increased the most in wholesale, after a decrease of 2,6 % in May, it increased by 11,7 % (it reached EUR 1 144). It also increased in retail trade by 4,8 % (it reached EUR 804), food and beverage service activities by 1,7 % (EUR 527), information and communication by 0,9 % (EUR 1 960) and in construction by 0,5 % (EUR 746). The largest decline in the average nominal monthly wage was in accommodation by 19,1 % (EUR 636), but it slowed down significantly compared with the previous month (in May, the year-on-year decline was 32,1 %). There was also a decrease in sales and repair of motor vehicles by 1,4 % (EUR 1 028), selected market services by 0,8 % (EUR 1 027), industry by 0,3 % (EUR 1 129) and transportation and storage by 0,2 % (EUR 1 009).

In June 2020, the average real monthly wage decreased year-on-year in most sectors, it increased only in wholesale and retail trade, but the development was more favourable than in May, when a decrease was recorded in all monitored sectors. In June 2020, compared to June 2019, it increased by 9,7 % in wholesale and by 2,9 % in retail trade. It decreased the most in accommodation by 20,5 %, a decrease was also in sale and repair of motor vehicles by 3,1 %, selected market services by 2,6 %, industry by 2,1 %, transportation and storage by 2 %, construction by 1,3 %, information and communication by 0,9 % and in food and beverage service activities by 0,1%.

On average in the first half of 2020, compared to the same period of 2019, the wage increased in retail trade by 4,8% (it reached EUR 788), in wholesale by 3,8 % (EUR 1 062), food and beverage service activities by 2,6 % (EUR 520), selected market services by 1,8 % (EUR 1 020), information and communication by 1,3 % (EUR 2 007) and in construction by 0,4 % (EUR 727). It decreased in accommodation by 11% (EUR 677), sale and repair of motor vehicles by 1,7 % (EUR 1 020), transportation and storage by 0,7% (EUR 999) ) and in industry by 0,3% (EUR 1 146).

The real monthly wage increased year-on-year in retail trade by 2,4 %, wholesale by 1,5 % and in food and beverage service activities by 0,3 %. It decreased in accommodation by 13 %, sale and repair of motor vehicles by 3,9 %, transportation and storage by 2,9 %, industry by 2,5 %, construction by 1,9 %, information and communication by 1 % and in selected market services by 0,5 %.
