In December 2020, turnover fluctuated, falling behind the sale of books and toys, but increasing in household stores

In summary, for the whole of 2020, retail turnover decreased by 1,1 % compared to 2019, they dropped mainly to the sellers in specialized stores (inter alia, covering the sale of footwear, textiles, drugstores). Hyper or supermarkets, which form the most important component of retail trade, achieved turnover growth by 5 %

Turnover in retail trade decreased year-on-year by 0,6 %, in December 2020, and the wave of measures in the second wave of the pandemic caused slippages rather for the smaller and specialized retailers, turnover rose in the hyper-markets and supermarkets. It is interesting that after the November growth, specialized stores focused on culture and recreation, which include, among other things, the sale of books and toys. At the last minute, before the Christmas, the sale of electrical appliances was rather preferred and hobby markets also continued to grow - turnover of specialized household stores was higher by 7 %, year-on-year, after a weaker November. There was a turnover increase also in activities including internet sales.

A drop of turnover continued in the sale and repair of motor vehicles, in December it fell by 11,2 %, year-on-year. After the fall in November, it began to increase again in December in wholesale, by 6,4 %. Turnover in accommodation, fell by 72 %, year on-year, at the end of 2020. The decline of turnover of food and beverage service activities also deepened.

Development in December 2020 compared to November 2020 1)

Compared to November 2020, turnover was higher only in wholesale, by 3,5 %. It dropped significantly among the providers of accommodation, by 13,3 %, month-on-month and among the operators of food and beverage service activities by 10,3 %. There was a decline also in sale and repair of motor vehicles by 3,9 % and in retail trade by 0,8 %.

Development in December 2020 compared to December 2019

Turnover in retail trade decreased by 0,6 % year-on-year in December 2020.  The decrease was recorded in five out of the nine monitored retail activities, it dropped mainly in proportionally less significant activities.

Turnover decreased the most significantly in specialized stores with other goods by 8,9 % which form the second most important component of retail trade. The turnover of retailers of goods for culture and recreation, including, inter alia, the sale of books, audio and video recordings, sports equipment and toys. Despite the fact that these are not significant retail activities in terms of volume, the decrease by 18,5 % significantly affected the drop in total retail turnover.

The year-on-year turnover growth contributed mostly to the mitigation of the overall decline, especially in the proportionally most significant component - sale of non-specialized stores (hypermarkets and supermarkets). Turnover in these activities decreased only in the first month of 2020, in the last months they increased year-on-year, in December they were higher by 3,2 % year-on-year. The overall development was also positively affected by the growth in retail trade not in stores, stalls and markets, which includes, inter alia, also mail-order and internet sales, the December turnover increased by 6,7 % year-on-year. Turnover in these activities, after the drop in the first half of the year, rose year-on-year, in the second half of 2020.

Due to the increased interest in information in connection with the corona crisis, the SO SR also provides extended information on selected more detailed retail trade activities 2). Within them, year-on-year turnover was lower in stores with footwear and leather goods by 36,4 % and in stores with clothing by 29,7 %. Compared to November, the decline significantly deepened in both activities. Turnover growth was recorded by retail stores of meat and meat products by 2,6 %.

The decrease in sale and repair of motor vehicles was above the level of 10 %, for the third consecutive month, the December fall reached 11,2 %. Turnover of sale of motor vehicles remained in negative numbers throughout 2020, lagging behind by 16,5 % in December. Development in repair and maintenance of motor vehicles, as well as in the sale of spare parts and accessories, was more favorable. In both activities, turnover increased equally by 9 % year-on-year in December, while turnover of spare parts and accessories increased for the first time after five months of decline.

After the decrease in November, wholesale turnover increased again in December 2020, by 6,4 %.

Turnover in accommodation, fell by 72 % at the end of 2020, it dropped more significantly only in April and May, the December turnover drop was the third largest during the year. The decline in food and beverage service activities also deepened, to 34,7 %.

Development during 2020 compared to the same period in 2019

During the entire year 2020, turnover in sale and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles decreased by a total of 17 %, compared with the corresponding period last year, being in year-on-year decrease throughout the entire year 2020. Of the individual activities, the worst development was recorded in the sale of motor vehicles, whose turnover did not exceed the level of 2019 in either month of 2020.

In internal trade compared with 2019, turnover rose only in wholesale, even only slightly, by 1,1 %.

In retail trade, turnover decreased by 1,1 %, compared with 2019, mainly the turnover of other goods in specialised stores decreased by a total of 5,8 %.  On the other hand, a deeper decline was prevented by the turnover development in the proportionally most significant activities, in retail trade in non-specialized stores, whose turnover increased by 5 % compared to 2019 and decreased in 2020 only in January.

In 2020, turnover in accommodation decreased by 45,2 % reached only a half of the volume of turnover in 2019. Turnover was also lower in food and beverage service activities by 10,6 %, compared with 2019.

We thank all enterprises that fulfilled the reporting obligation, even in the current difficult situation, and provided the Statistical Office of the SR with primary data required for a compilation of statistics on turnover in internal trade.
