Turnover in selected sectors of economy in March 2020

In March 2020, a year-on-year decrease of turnover was recorded in almost in all sectors, they decreased the most in industry. An increase of turnover persisted only in information and communication activities.

Development in March 2020 in comparison with February 2020 1)

Turnover decreased, month-on-month, in all selected sectors of economy. In industry by 19,5 %, in selected market services by 10 %, in transportation and storage by 9,2 %, in construction by 6 % and in information and communication by 4,2 %.

Development in March 2020 compared with March 2019

In March, turnover in industry decreased by 18,6 %, year-on-year, reaching the lowest level since July 2009. The development by the SK NACE sections was affected by a decrease in manufacturing by 20,1 %; in electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply by 10,5 %; in mining and quarrying by 0,5 % and by an increase in water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation by 0,9 %. In terms of particular groupings of industrial sectors, which contributed at most to the total turnover decrease, the most significant drop was recorded in manufacture of transport equipment by 36,4 %, manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products by 40,1 % and in electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply by 10,5 %, in manufacture of rubber and plastic products and other non-metallic mineral products by 11,4 % and in manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. by 13 %.Turnover increased in manufacture of food, beverages and tobacco products by 13 %, manufacture of wood, paper products and printing by 12,6 %, manufacture of chemicals and chemical products by 9,7 %, manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations by 29,1 % and in water supply, sewerage and waste management by 0,9 %.

In construction, the turnover decreased again after a two-month year-on-year decrease, compared with March 2019 it was lower by 5,7 %.

Turnover in transportation and storage 2) decreased by 7,6 %, year-on-year, a drop was recorded almost in all activities. A total decrease was affected the most in warehousing and support activities in transportation by 16,1 % and in land transport and transport via pipelines by 5 %. Turnover increased only in postal and courier services by 25,2 %.

Turnover in information and communication 3) increased, year-on-year, by 2,6 % affected by higher turnover mainly in computer programming by 14,3 %. A year-on-year decrease was recorded in the majority of activities, of which it was the most significant in communications by 3,6 %.

The turnover growth in selected market services 4), which persisted since 2015, stopped in March 2020. Compared with March 2019, turnover decreased by 7,7 %, it decreased in the majority of activities. The total decrease was affected the most by lower turnover in travel agencies and tour operator activities, which decreased by more than a half (by 53,9 %), office administrative, office support and other business support services by 11 %, in arts, entertainment and recreation by 8,9 %. Turnover increased year-on-year the most in advertising and market research by 4,6 %.

Development in the first three months of 2020 compared with the corresponding period in 2019

Since the beginning of the year, turnover in industry decreased, year-on-year, by 7,1 %. The development by the SK NACE sections was affected by a decrease in electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply by 8,9 %, manufacturing by 7,2 % and by an increase in water supply, sewerage and waste management and remediation by 6,6 % and in mining and quarrying by 6,5 %. In terms of particular groupings of industrial sectors, turnover decreased the most mainly in manufacture of transport equipment by 13,1 %, electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply by 8,9 %, manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products by 24,8 %, manufacture of basic metal and fabricated metal products except machinery and equipment by 4,1 % and in manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. by 5,7 %. Turnover decreased, year-on-year, mainly in manufacture of wood and paper products, printing by 13,2 %, manufacture of food, beverages and tobacco products by 8,1 %, manufacture of chemicals and chemical products by 5,8 %, water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation by 6,6 % and in mining and quarrying by 6,5 %.

Turnover in construction increased by 2,4 %.

Turnover in transportation and storage, decreased, year-on-year by 3,8 %, a decrease was affected mainly by lower turnover in warehousing and support activities in transportation by 10,5 %. A turnover drop was also in other activities, except postal and courier services, where an increase by 12 % was observed.

Total turnover in information and communication activities rose by 7,3 %. An increase was the most significantly affected by the higher turnover in computer programming by 14,7 %. Lower year-on-year turnover was only in motion picture, video and television programme production and radio and television broadcasting.

In selected market services, turnover increased by 1,8 %. An increase was affected especially by real estate activities by 12,1 %, in gambling and betting activities by 9,2 %, in office administrative, office support and other business support services by 2,9 %. Turnover decreased only in architectural and engineering activities by 4,5 % and in security and investigation activities by 3,9 %.
