In August, turnover in retail trade and in catering services grew for the second month in a row

The year-on-year decline in turnover continued in accommodation, however it was milder by 17 %. Turnover in sale and repair of motor vehicles dropped more considerably, mainly due to a decrease in car sales by 13,8 %. Turnover in other activities developed positively, it grew in wholesale by 2,3 % and for the second month in a row, the turnover rose in restaurants and beverage service activities by 6,8 % and in retail sale by 4 %. In a month-on-month comparison, turnover in accommodation grew the most significantly by 14,7 %, a decrease was recorded in sale and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles and in wholesale.

At the month-on-month level, growth was maintained in most of the main business activities. Turnover in accommodation increased the most, compared to August their volume was higher by 14,7 %, they also grew in the activities of restaurants and beverage service activities by 2,8 % and in retail sale by 1,7 %. The month-on-month decrease was recorded in turnover of motor vehicles and motorcycles by 4,4 % and in wholesale by 2,9 %.

The year-on-year decline of turnover in sale and repairs of motor vehicles and motorcycles continued, but deepened more than in the previous two months. In August, turnover was lower by 9,7 %. The decrease was influenced by lower turnover of motor vehicles (by 13,8 %) and also in sale of parts and accessories (by 12,9 %). Only turnover from repair and maintenance of motor vehicles increased.

Turnover in wholesale grew for the third month in a row, increasing by 2,3 % year-on-year. The increase was recorded in most activities, but mainly the turnover in wholesale of household goods by 9,4 %, non-specialized wholesale by 6,3 % and after six months of decline also turnover in wholesale of ICT equipment by 16,7 %. There was a decrease in two activities, the largest in other specialized wholesale (by 7,6 %).

After a four-month decline during the first wave of the pandemic, turnover in retail trade rose for the second month in a row. While they were by 1,5 % higher year-on-year in July, they increased by 4 % in August. Growth continued in retail trade in non-specialized stores (hypermarkets and supermarkets) by 7,5 %, for the second month in a row retail trade outside stores, stalls and markets also grew by 9,5 %. After five months of decline, turnover in retail trade of other goods in specialized stores also increased by 3,1 %. There was a turnover drop in the structure of retail trade only in three out of nine activities, while there was a largest decline in retail trade of food, beverages and tobacco in specialized stores (by 3 %).

Also in August, the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic provided extended monthly information on the turnover on selected more detailed retail activities, as part of the increased interest in data on the changes in the economy. 2) The turnover decline, which characterized the development in the previous months, stopped in June and the turnover in the last two months recorded a year-on-year growth in the majority of activities. Turnover in retail stores with clothing increased significantly by 11,2 %. Within the group of specialized food operations, retail sale of tobacco products achieved higher turnover by 8,6 % in August, but turnover of meat and meat products recorded a lower turnover by 8,1 % year-on-year.

Although the turnover in August in accommodation did not reach the last year's level, in spite of that, the pace of their decline continued to slow down. Compared to August 2019, they were lower by 17 % (the previous month it was at the level of 29 %).

After four months of decline, the turnover increase continued in restaurant and beverage service activities also for the second summer month. While in July, the turnover was higher by 4,8 %, in August it reached an increase by 6,8 %.

Development over the first eight months of 2020 compared with the corresponding period of 2019

For the first eight months of 2020, turnover in sale and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles dropped by 19,3 %.

A turnover increase in wholesale was only very slight, compared with the corresponding period of last year, by 0,5 %.

In retail trade, turnover decreased by 2,6 %, it dropped in almost all activities, most considerably in retail sale of other goods in specialized stores by 9,4 % and in retail sale of automotive fuel in specialized stores by 8,6 %. Turnover increased only in retail sale in non-specialized stores by 5,4 %.

Turnover in accommodation decreased by 39,3 % since the beginning of the year.

Turnover in the activities of restaurant and beverage service activities decreased by 6,2 % compared to the corresponding period last year.
