Construction output rose by 8,4 % year-on-year, though it is still lagging behind the pre-pandemic period by a tenth

Civil engineering works increased more significantly than works on buildings, the comparable base - April last year, was significantly affected by the first wave of the pandemic. The pre-pandemic level was exceeded only by the less significant jobs abroad, increasing by almost two thirds year-on-year.

The volume of construction work in April reached EUR 400,3 million, compared to the corresponding period last year it increased by 8,4 %. However, the data on construction output for April were compared year-on-year with the period when there was a significant economic slowdown related to the fall of individual parameters as part of radical measures during the first wave of the pandemic. The construction output thus remained approximately 5 % below the level of production in the corresponding period before the pandemic (compared to April 2019).

Month-on-month, construction output was lower by 0,4 %, after seasonal adjustment.

During April 2021, all types of construction activities increased year-on-year, but none of them reached the level of April two years ago. The total volume of work on the domestic market reached EUR 362,1 million. Compared to April 2020, it increased by 4,7 %, the higher year-on-year activity was evident in both components - in new construction (including modernization and reconstruction) by 3,2 % as well as in repair and maintenance by 5,6 %. Both components were approximately about a tenth less productive than in April two years ago.

In terms of output specification, civil engineering works increased more significantly (by 6,7 %), which also includes among other things, the construction of motorways, and for the second month, work on construction of buildings also increased (by 3,8 %). The more significant production in civil engineering still significantly, by more than 15 %, lagged behind the volume two years ago.

For the second month in a row, construction activities carried out abroad were also higher, in April significantly by 62 % and, as a result, exceeded the level of April two years ago. However, cross-border work represents only a tenth of total construction output.

On average, in the four months of 2021, construction output reached the volume of EUR 1 308,2 million compared to the corresponding period of 2020 it decreased by 6,6 %. The volume of work on new construction, including modernization and reconstruction, decreased by 11,3 % (two-thirds of domestic production), while the decrease in repair and maintenance work reached 3,2 %.

Note: preliminary data; construction output includes volume of works realized by own employees; including estimation of production for self-employed persons and construction establishments of non-construction enterprises; absolute data are at current prices, indices are calculated from constant prices (average prices of 2015).
