Turnover in selected sectors of economy in April 2020

In April 2020, the development of turnover was characterized by a decrease in almost all sectors, historical minimum was recorded in some of these sectors. The largest drop in turnover by more than 70% was recorded in the manufacture of transport equipment and in turnover of travel agencies and tour operators. A rise in turnover was maintained in information and communication and within industrial production, the group of the pharmaceutical industry.

Development in April 2020 in comparison with April 2019 

Turnover in industry decreased, year-on-year by 46,5 % representing the historically biggest decline since the establishment of the Slovak Republic.

As regards the 16 monitored sectors in total, a decrease in turnover was recorded by up to 15 of them. In individual groups of sectors, turnover fell from 8,5 % (manufacture of chemicals and chemical products) to 77,1 % (manufacture of transport equipment). A rise in turnover was recorded in one group - in the manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations, where turnover increased by 11% compared to April 2019.

In addition to a decrease in the main manufacture of transport equipment, the total volume of turnover was also significantly affected by a decrease in manufacture of metals and fabricated metal products except machinery and equipment by 34,7 %, manufacture of rubber and plastic products and other non-metallic mineral products by 42,3 %. Turnover also decreased in the manufacture of machinery and equipment by 35,7 % and in the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products by 45,2 %. As regards the turnover, a significant component is also formed by enterprises in the field of ​​electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply, where turnover dropped by 11 %.

In the group manufacture of food, beverages and tobacco products, turnover decreased by 14,2 %, a decrease was recorded by both beverage producers and food producers.

In construction, turnover decreased by 16,7 % compared to April, it was the biggest decrease since 2017.

A year-on-year drop of turnover in transportation and storage  1) by a quarter (by 25,6 %) also surpassed the decline during the economic crisis (by 18,5 % in 2009). A decrease was almost in all activities, the most significant one in land transport and transport via pipelines by 24,4 % and in warehousing and support activities by 31,5 %. Turnover rose only in water transport.

Turnover rose only in information and communication 2), compared to April 2019, it increased by 1,2 %. A growth was affected by higher turnover in computer programming by 11,7 % and in telecommunications by 3,1 %. Other service activities recorded a fall.

In selected market services 3) , turnover dropped by 14,8 % year-on-year. The total decrease was the most affected by lower turnover in gambling and betting activities by 34,5 %, office administrative, office support and other business support services by 18,1 % and in travel agencies and tour operator activities, which realized only a quarter of the turnover volume of the previous year. The growing trend of turnover was maintained by enterprises operating in real estate activities as well as in architectural and engineering activities.

Turnover decreased month-on-month almost in all selected sectors of economy. In industry by 31 %, in transportation and storage by 14,1 %, in construction by 7,9 % and in selected market services by 4,7 %. It increased only in information and communication activities by 0,3 %.

Since the beginning of the year, turnover decreased in industry by 18 %, year-on-year. The development by SK NACE sections was affected by decrease in manufacturing by 19,5 %, electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply by 9,6 %, mining and quarrying by 1,6 % and by an increase in water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation by 1,1 %. Since the beginning of the year, turnover decreased in transport equipment by 28,5 %, in manufacture of basic metal and fabricated metal products except machinery and equipment by 15,1 %, in manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products by 29,9 %, electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply by 9,6 % and in manufacture of rubber and plastic products and other non-metallic mineral products by 13,3 %. Turnover increased, year-on-year, in manufacture of chemicals and chemical products by 5,6 %, manufacture of food, beverages and tobacco products by 1,6 %, manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations by 7,8 % and in water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation by 1,1 %.

Turnover in construction was lower by 3,7 % than in the corresponding period in 2019.

Turnover in transportation and storage decreased, year-on-year, by 9,4 %, the decrease was affected mainly by lower turnover in warehousing and support services for transportation by 15,9 % and in land transport and transport via pipelines by 6,7 %. In postal and courier activities the turnover dropped by 8,4 %.

Total turnover in information and communication activities increased by 5,7 %, while an increase was only in computer programming by 13,9 % and in telecommunication by 1,2 %. The turnover decreased in other service activities.

In selected market services, the turnover decreased by 2,4 %. It fell the most in travel agencies and tour operator activities by 16,2 %. A considerable decrease was also in administrative and support service activities and other business support activities by 2,7 % and in gaming and betting activities by 1,5 %. Turnover increased only in real estate activities, in renting and leasing and in other activities.
