Turnover in internal trade in November 2021

Turnover of retail sale increased by 3.9 %, year-on-year, in November, it exceeded the pre-pandemic level by almost 4 %

Five of the nine retail components exceeded the pre-pandemic turnover. In particular, wholesale continued to do well, it surpassed the pre-pandemic period by more than a quarter. The accommodation providers recorded an increase in turnover, but they were almost 59 % short of the level of November 2019.

In November 2021, compared to the same period last year, turnover in retail sale increased by 3.9 %. A year-on-year growth was more considerable than in October, when turnover rose by 2.2 % at slower rate. The development of turnover was distinctive due to the pandemic situation, therefore the SO SR also continues to report a comparison with turnover two years ago (with November 2019). Turnover of retail sale exceeded the pre-pandemic level by 3.5 % (at constant prices).

Turnover increased, year-on-year, in seven of the nine retail components; in total 5 from the 9 retail components recorded higher turnover than before the pandemic (as in November 2019). The most significant component - retail trade in non-specialized stores (hypermarkets and supermarkets) recorded a year-on-year decrease of turnover the second month in a row, although very modest, only by 0.2 %. Nevertheless, turnover reached a volume higher than before the pandemic by almost 2 %.

The overall year-on-year increase in turnover of retail sale was more significantly reflected in turnover of ICT equipment by 14.1 %, which was considerably closer to the level of two years ago (the lag behind was only by 0.5 %). Turnover of retail trade for other goods in specialized stores (which includes sales of footwear, textiles, drugstores) also rose by 3.5 % and in specialized stores with household goods by 0.5 %. Both of these retail components also recorded higher turnover than in the same period before the pandemic, but more considerable increase of turnover was recorded in specialized household stores including hobby-markets, by 6.2 %.

For the third month in a row, retail trade not in stores, stalls and markets (which also includes mail order and internet sales) exceeded most considerably the values of turnover  two years ago, by more than a fifth in November. Year-on-year turnover of this retail component was higher by 11.5 %.

Retail trade in stalls and markets did not yet reached the level of turnover before the pandemic, it also recorded lower turnover year-on-year. Specialized stores with food, beverages and tobacco and also stores with automotive fuels recorded higher turnover, but it lagged behind in comparison with turnover of November 2019.

Development of other components of trade in November 2021 compared to November 2020

In November 2021, turnover of sale and repair of motor vehicles again increased by 7 % at constant prices, year-on-year, after a decline in October. Although it did not reach the level of 2019, it came closer to it, the lag behind was at the level of 8.3 %. A year-on-year increase  was recorded in all three components of activities. The overall growth was mainly influenced by higher turnover of sale of motor vehicles by 5.3 %, but the only one did not  reach the pre-pandemic level.

In November, turnover of wholesale increased by 31.7 %, compared to the pre-pandemic period (November 2019), it increased by almost 29 %. The level of turnover two years ago was exceeded by all wholesale activities, most significantly wholesale of agricultural raw materials and live animals (by almost 82 %). Specialized wholesale increased the most year-on-year (by more than 46 %).

Turnover of accommodation also recorded a year-on-year increase (by 30.7 %), but it lagged behind the level of two years ago by almost 60 %.

In food and beverage service activities, turnover declined again more considerably by 7.5 %, year-on-year, in November; compared to November 2019, it was lower by a third.

In November 2021, compared to the previous month (October 2021), turnover rose in sale and repair of motor vehicles by 2.9 % and in wholesale by 1.7 %. Turnover decreased in accommodation by 28.5 %, food and beverage service activities by 21.3 % and in retail trade by 0.7 % month-on-month.

Development in the eleven months of 2021 compared to the same period in 2020

In total, in the eleven months of 2021 (January-November 2021), turnover was higher in wholesale by 19.9 %, in sale and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles by 12 % and in retail trade by 1.4 % year-on-year.

In accommodation, turnover declined by 18.4 % in eleven months, compared to the same period last year. A year-on-year decrease was recorded in food and beverage service activities by 13.8 %.
