Majority of sectors approached pre-pandemic levels, most considerably construction, industry lagged behind the most

In May, turnover increased year-on-year in all monitored sectors of the economy, but the level of turnover before the pandemic has so far only been reached by information and communication activities. Industry lagged behind by almost 13 %, other sectors reduced the lag to a single-digit value, construction to only less than 3 %.

The high turnover growth achieved in some sectors, similarly as in the previous month and in May, is related to the comparative base - in the corresponding period last year, many sectors recorded significant turnover drops due to anti-pandemic measures.

Turnover in industry reached a year-on-year increase by 31,8 % in May 2021, while in the manufacture of transport equipment they increased by more than a half. However, they did not reach the level of turnover before the pandemic, the entire industry lagged behind May two years ago by less than 13 %.

The development in information and communication activities was favorable, the year-on-year increase in turnover was double-digit (by 12,3 %), the achieved turnover also exceeded the level before the pandemic by almost 6 % (May 2019).

Year-on-year turnover growth was also achieved in transport, turnover increased by 29,9 % compared to May last year, in construction by 11,9 % and in selected market services by 10,9 %. However, these sectors remained beyond the pre-Covid period (May 2019), but in all of them the decline was single-digit, in transport and selected market services at around 5 %, in construction by less than 3 %.

Development in May 2021 compared to April 2021 1)

In a month-on-month comparison, turnover in May compared with April 2021 increased by 3,8 % in information and communication by 3,8 %, in construction by 3,5 % and in selected market services by 3,2 % They decreased in two industries, in industry by 5,3 % and in transport and storage by 2,5 %.

Development in May 2021 compared with May 2020

Compared to last May, turnover in industry increased by almost a third (by 31,8 %). Year-on-year increase was recorded in fifteen of the 16 monitored industries 2), the decrease was only in manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products. However, only three of the 16 industries achieved higher turnover than in the period before the pandemic (May 2019).

High turnover growth in individual industries, as well as in the whole sector, was also influenced in May by a significant drop last year caused by the reduction or even interruption of production of most enterprises. Turnover in manufacture of transport equipment increased the most, it rose by 54,8 % compared to the corresponding period last year, but they did not reach the level of turnover before the pandemic (May 2019), they lagged behind by almost 20 %.

After the manufacture of transport equipment, the most significant increase in turnover was recorded in manufacture of metals, machinery and equipment n.e.c. and in manufacture of computer products, growth was above 40 % in each of these sectors. There was also a significant increase in manufacture of rubber and plastic products by 22 %. The turnover drop  was only in manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products; last year they were one of the two sectors that were in year-on-year growth, reaching an increase of almost 30 %.

Revenues in construction increased by 11,9 % year-on-year, thus significantly approaching the level before the pandemic. Compared to turnover achieved in May two years ago, they were only less than 3 % lower.

In transportation and storage 3), turnover in May 2021 increased by 29,9 % compared to May of the previous year, but lagged behind the period before the pandemic (May 2019) by approximately 5 %. Turnover rose year-on-year in almost all activities, most notably in land and pipeline transport, whose turnover increased by more than a quarter year-on-year, and in warehouse and support service activities by more than 40 % growth. They also recorded an increase of over 40 % in air transport, but these activities are less significant. Out of a total of five transport and storage activities, only postal and courier services rose above the pre-pandemic level, exceeding the turnover of two years ago by more than 11 %.

Turnover in information and communication activities 4) (ICT) increased by 12,3 % year-on-year in May 2021, falling for the first time in the corresponding period last year due to a pandemic. Turnover in May rose the most significantly in computer programming, year-on-year growth by 16 % exceeded the level before the pandemic (May 2019) and with year-on-year growth by 46,1 %, the share of less significant activities for radio and television broadcasting also reached the level of two years ago.

Turnover in selected market services 5) recorded a double-digit increase in May, growing by 10,9 % year-on-year, but have not yet reached the level of two years ago. Turnover in office administrative and office support activities increased the most by 35,7 % and in gaming and betting offices by 23,2 %. For the second month in a row, turnover of travel agencies and offices increased by more than 50 %, but are still less than a third of the pre-pandemic volume (May 2019). The level of turnover two years ago was exceeded only by administrative and office support activities, real estate activities and, despite the year-on-year decline, also by architectural and engineering activities (in May last year they were growing by more than 20 %).

Development over the first five month of 2021 compared with the corresponding period in 2020

In summary, over the first five months, turnover in industry rose by 20,2 %, year-on-year, it increased the most in manufacture of transport equipment by 40,3 %, in manufacture of metals the increase was also significant by 19,1 % and in manufacture of computer products by 37 %.

Turnover in transportation and storage increased by 14 %, in information and communication activities it rose  by 3,6 %. Year-on-year, turnover dropped n selected market services by 3,7 % and in turnover of construction entities by 2,5 %.
