In July 2020, retail turnover was up 1,5 %, year-on-year, after four months of decline

Traders in all components of internal trade are prospering again, gradually returning to normal. The volume of turnover at the pre-pandemic level could not be achieved only by accommodation service providers and car dealers.

Slovak traders are once again expecting a growth. After four months of decline, turnover increased in retail trade by 1,5 %, year-on-year in July. Of individual key retail activities, turnover increased mainly in retail sale in non-specialized stores (hypermarkets and supermarkets) by 4,6 % and in retail sale of other household goods in specialized stores (hobby markets, furniture, textiles and consumer electronics stores) by 12,6 %. Smaller components of retail trade had also higher turnover by 15 %, year-on-year - stores with information and communication technologies and sales of culture and recreation goods.

Only four out of nine activities were below the level of turnover in July 2019 in the retail structure, while the relatively highest decrease was in retail trade in stalls and markets (by 40,3 %). However, these activities do not represent a significant share in the total turnover. The most considerable decrease of turnover was in retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialized stores by 7,1 % and in retail sale of automotive fuel in specialized stores by 5,1 %, though it is influenced year-on-year by lower unit prices of automotive fuel.

As part of the increased interest in data on the economy changes, the SO SR also provides monthly information on turnover in retail trade extended by selected more detailed retail trade activities. 1) Sales in specialized retail stores with clothing recorded higher turnover by 11,8 %, in stores with footwear and leather goods the turnover in July rose by 14 %. Growth was also recorded in operations with meat and meat products by 4 % (belonging to the group of specialized operations with food, beverages and tobacco).

In other components of internal trade, the situation continued to be complicated by hoteliers and car dealers. A significant year-on-year decline in turnover continued in accommodation, in July by 29 % (in the previous month it was 61,2 %). Turnover from the sale and repair of motor vehicles was lower by 2,7 % than last year, however, the rate of decline was the slowest since the beginning of the year and the index in constant prices reached the index before the outbreak of the pandemic.

For the second month in a row, turnover in wholesale developed favorably, it was higher by 8 %, year-on-year. After four months of decline, an increase was recorded also in restaurants and beverage service activities, by 4,8 %.

Altogether, in the first seven months of 2020 compared with the corresponding period last year, turnover in retail trade decreased by 3,6 % and in sales and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles by 20,5 %. Although in wholesale, aggregated turnover was slightly higher by 0,2 %, since the beginning of the year.

Since the beginning of the year, turnover in accommodation decreased by 43,4 %, year-on-year and in food and beverage services by 8,4 %.

Accommodation includes activities: hotel and similar accommodation, tourist and other short-term accommodation, caravan parks, caravan sites and other accommodation. Food and beverage services include restaurant activities and mobile food serving services, food delivery and other service and beverage serving activities.
