Turnover in selected sectors of economy in November 2021

Turnover increased, year-on-year, in all five sectors of the economy,  turnover of the important industry also exceeded pre-pandemic values

Turnover increased most significantly in transportation and storage as well as in information and communication by more than 10 % during November 2021. After three months of decline, turnover of industry also recorded positive numbers and significantly exceeded the pre-pandemic values of turnover (in November 2019).

A year-on-year decrease in turnover of industry was stopped after three months, and this key sector of the Slovak economy recorded a growth of turnover by 4.6 % in November. Turnover of industry increased at constant prices even in comparison with the pre-pandemic values of turnover (with November 2019) by 7.8 %.

Turnover also increased in the other four sectors. After a one-month year-on-year decline, turnover of selected market services again increased by 2.5 %. Turnover of construction improved by 0.4 % year-on-year, but it dropped by 11,6 % compared to pre-pandemic values of turnover.

Turnover continued to improve significantly in companies of transportation and storage, turnover rose by 12.2 %, year-on-year, in November and compared to November 2019, it recorded a rise of 8.3 %. Entities operating in the information and communication recorded higher increase, their turnover rose by 13.5 % year-on-year, but they were still 2.2 % short of the pre-pandemic values.

The SO SR also presents a comparison with the same period before the pandemic in order to enable an analysis of the development of individual sectors of the economy, to monitor whether they are successful to overcome the declines caused by the pandemic in 2020. Turnover of transportation and storage and information and communication are compared at current prices, other sectors of the economy at constant prices.

Development in November 2021 compared to October 20211)

After adjusting for seasonal effects (including the effect of the number of working days), turnover of industry increased by 7.4 % month-on-month. Turnover of selected market services increased by 2.3 % compared to October and turnover of information and communication by 2.2 %. Turnover decreased, month-on-month, in transportation and storage (by 0.5 %) as well as in construction (by 0.3 %).

More detailed information on the year-on-year development of turnover in November 2021

In November, after three months of decline, turnover of industry finally recorded positive numbers and rose by 4.6 % year on year, but it was also higher than before the pandemic. A result in industry was positively affected mainly by a rise in turnover in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (by 30 %), in manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal structures (by 14.1%), in manufacture of machinery and equipment (by 22.9 %), in manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (by 18.6 %) and in manufacture of rubber and plastic products (by 12.3 %). However, turnover decreased in the important manufacture of transport equipment for the fourth month in a row, year-on-year, it dropped by 13,8 % in November.

In construction, after last month's return to growth, turnover also increased by 0.4 %, year-on-year, in November. However, it continued to lag behind the turnover two years ago (October 2019) in double-digit by 11.6 %.

In November, turnover of transportation and storage2) increased by 12.2 %, year-on-year, it is almost identical to the growth in October. For the sixth month in a row, this sector recorded higher turnover than before the pandemic, it rose by 8.3 % in November. A year-on-year increase was reflected in the two most important divisions, i.e. in warehousing and support activities for transportation by 25.5 %, as well as in land transport and transport via pipelines by 5.2 %. Both divisions again exceeded the values ​​of turnover two years ago (November 2019) and have been continuing in this trend for half a year.

In information and communication3), turnover increased by 13.5 % year-on-year, although compared to the same period two years ago, it was lower by 2.2 %. The year-on-year growth of turnover was reached by all the six divisions monitored, the most important component- computer programming and consulting this time increased by an interesting 16.4 % year-on-year. The highest growth of turnover was reflected in the less significant motion picture and television program production (by 54 %), which, however, suffered significant drops last year. Only turnover of publishing activities (by 11.4 %) and motion picture and television program production (by 16.7 %) exceeded the level two years ago. On the contrary, there was a significant drop in turnover of computer programming, consulting and information services, which represented a decrease by 21.8 % compared to turnover in November 2019.

Turnover of selected market services4) again increased after a decline last month. In November, turnover increased by 2.5 % year-on-year and almost reached the values ​​as in the same period before the pandemic (November 2019). Compared to the period before the pandemic, this result was mainly influenced by an increase in other education and educational support activities by 20.8 %, but also in administrative, support office and other business support activities by 15 %. Compared to November 2019, turnover in security and investigation activities more significantly decreased by 29.7 %. Administrative and support office and other business support activities, which increased by 18.4% year-on-year, as well as gambling and betting activities with a year-on-year growth of 2.2 % largely affected the current year-on-year growth of turnover in the sector.

A year-on-year growth of turnover also continued in travel agencies and tour operator offices by 21 %, but their value was still only at the level of approximately 35 % of the values ​reached before the pandemic (in November 2019).

Development for the eleven months of 2021 compared to the same period in 2020

In total, in the eleven months of 2021, turnover of industry increased by 8.7 % year-on-year. The result was mainly due to higher turnover in manufacture of machinery and equipment by 20.5 %, in manufacture of metals by 16.6 % as well as in manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products by 16.4 %. Turnover in electricity supply increased by 9.1 %. However, these increases should be taken into account in the context of a lower comparable base in 2020, when the turnover drops were the result of the first wave of the pandemic.

In total, in eleven months, turnover in transportation and storage increased by 12.3 % year-on-year and in information and communication by 7.5 %.  In construction, total turnover remained the same year-on-year level as in the corresponding period of 2020. Only turnover of selected market services decreased by half a percentage point.
