2,59 million Slovaks were employed in the domestic economy and abroad, the employment rate reached 73,4 %

According to the Labour Force Sample Survey, a dynamics of the employment growth slowed down by 1,2 p.p. in the 3rd quarter  of 2019, the employment growth reached 0,2 %. The number of employed 2) increased by 6,1 thous. to 2 585,1 thous. persons. Only women increased in number at labour market, their number rose by 13,9 thous., the number of employed men decreased by 7,8 thous.. The employment rate 3) rose by 0,7 p.p. to 73,4 %, year-on-year. After excluding the number of employed abroad, the employment in Slovakia increased by 0,6 % to 2 453,8 thous. persons.

Compared with the 2nd quarter of 2019, the seasonally adjusted total employment increased by 0,2 %, to 2 581,5 thous. persons.

Employment in the 3rd quarter of 2019

Increasing employment in agriculture, which began in early 2019, also continued in the 3rd quarter, the number of employed in this sector rose by 15,9 thous. persons. The number of employed also increased in selected sectors of services, of which mostly in information and communication by 15,5 thous., professional, scientific and technical activities by 13,4 thous. and education by 9,7 thous. The employment decreased, year-on-year, in industry by 4,4 thous. and in construction by 6,9 thous. persons.

The employment growth was mainly affected by higher number of entrepreneurs 4)   by 12,7 thous. (by 3,3 %), year-on-year. The total number of employees was mostly increased by entrepreneurs without employees by 10,4 thous. (by 3,4 %), the number of entrepreneurs with employees increased by 2,3 thous. (by 2,9 %). Only the number of employees decreased, year-on-year, by 7,4 thous. to 2 189,3 thous. persons, due to a lower number of persons performing activation and work by agreement. After excluding these people, the number of contract employees rose by 0,4 % or by 9,2 thous. to 2 127,6 thous..

The total employment by age structure increased mostly in the age group 60 and older, with an increase by 19,9 thous. of the employed and in the age group  35-49 with a rise by 19,6 thous. persons. In both groups, the number of employed women especially increased. Composition of labour market was affected also by a considerable decrease of young persons in the age group 15-24 by 26,5 thous..

The employment increased, year-on-year, most in Bratislavský kraj by 2,1 %, this region also reached the highest employment rate 81,1 % with the speediest increase by 1,6 p.p..The number of employed decreased year-on-year, in Trnavský, Trenčiansky and Košický kraj. In both of them, the employment rate also decreased (in Košický by 0,7 p.p. and in Trenčiansky by 0,1 p.p.).

On average, in the 1st – 3rd quarter of 2019, the total employment increased, year-on-year, by 0,9 % to 2 581,1 thous. persons.

People working abroad

According to the LFSS 5) the employed working abroad for less than one year reached 131,3 thous. persons.  Compared with 3rd quarter of 2018, their number decreased by 5,5 % (by 7,7 thous. persons), a dynamics of decrease speeded up by 3,1 p.p. year-on-year.

They worked mostly in industry (34,9 thous. persons), in construction (31,4 thous. persons) and in health and social work activities (27,1 thous. persons). Regarding the European countries, they worked mostly in Austria (43,6 thous. persons), in the Czech Republic (30 thous. persons) and in Germany (23 thous. persons). The employed persons working abroad were especially from Prešovský kraj (28,3 thous.) and Nitriansky kraj (24,5 thous.).

In the 3rd quarter of 2019, the number of job vacancies 6) decreased by 3 279 (13,6 %), on average, to 20 796 posts. Their number dropped, absolutely the most, in manufacturing (by 1 635 posts), in wholesale and in retail trade (by 824 posts), in accommodation and food service activities (by 530 posts). Job vacancies increased in number most considerably in health and social work activities (by 253 posts).

2) according to the LFSS, the employed are all persons over 15 age, who perform work for 1 hour at least in surveyed (reference) week and who get wage, salary or other remuneration or bonus in order to gain profit, including persons performing a contractual work, seasonal workers, persons on maternity leave, persons employed abroad less than 1 year, persons commuting to work abroad and persons paid for activation works; respondents are included into sectors by economic activity of local unit, not the whole company
3) share of the employed in the age category 20–64 expressed in percentages from the population of the same age
4)  shareholders, self-employees, self-employed farmers, persons engaged in the liberal profession with one or major occupation
5) migration for work abroad lasting less than one year including unspecified time for journey to work
6)  number of job vacancies - number of newly created, no occupied or vacant jobs by quarterly statistical statement including estimate for tradesmen
