Turnover in selected sectors of economy in August 2021

Turnover decreased again in industry, manufacture of transport equipment fell by almost a third, on the contrary, turnover in information and communication increased in double digit value

In August 2021, compared to August last year, turnover dropped again in industry, falling mainly in manufacture of transport equipment, by almost a third. In another four of the five monitored sectors of the economy, turnover rose year-on-year. Turnover before the pandemic exceeded information and communication (IC) in double digit value; on the contrary, construction, industry lagged behind by more than 9 % and selected market services by less than 3 % in double digits.

As in previous months, the development of August´s turnover was influenced by the comparable base, although the impact of anti-pandemic measures in some sectors continued.

After six months of growth, turnover fell by 6.6 % in industry, year-on-year, manufacture of transport equipment slumped by almost a third. Manufacture of transport equipment decreased by the same amount even in comparison with the turnover before the pandemic (August 2019), the total turnover of the industry lagged behind by more than 9 %.

Year-on-year, turnover increased by 15.5 % in information and communication, by 9.8 % in transport, by 6.3 % in construction and by 3 % in selected market services. In the first two sectors, the achieved turnover also exceeded the level before the pandemic (August 2019), turnover of selected market services continued to lag behind by almost 3 %, lagging behind of construction was more considerable and had a double-digit value.

Development in August 2021 compared to July 2021 1)

Compared to the previous month (July 2021), turnover increased by 2.8 % in construction, by 2.7 % in information and communication, and by 0.7 % in selected market services in August. A month-on-month decrease was only by 12.9 % in industry. In transportation and storage, it remained unchanged, at the level of July 2021.

More detailed information on the development of turnover in August 2021 compared to August 2020

After six months of continuous growth, turnover fell by 6.6 % in industry, year-on-year, in August, the decrease was the most affected by an almost one-third decline in the manufacture of transport equipment. Compared to the period before the pandemic (August 2019), the total turnover lagged behind by more than 9 %, manufacture of transport equipment by almost a third (by 31.6 %). In addition, seven of the 16 monitored industries were below the level of August 2019 2). In the previous two months, the industry's total turnover were already above the level of 2019.

In addition to the manufacture of transport equipment, turnover decreased year-on-year in another three of the 16 industries, namely in manufacture of computer products by 6 %, in mining and quarrying by 7.6 % and in other manufacturing by 1.6 %. A decline in the total turnover was moderated by a year-on-year increase mainly in manufacture of basic metals by 11.3 %, in manufacture of machinery and equipment by 22.2 % and in electricity and gas supply by 6.9 %, turnover of these sectors exceeded the turnover of two years ago.

In construction, after a decrease last month, turnover increased again, year-on-year, by 6.3 %. It lagged behind the turnover of two years ago (August 2019) by more than 13%.

August´s turnover increased by 9.8 % in transportation and storage 3), year-on-year, and for the third month in a row it also exceeded turnover from the period before the pandemic, compared to August 2019, it were higher by 4 %. Compared to the previous year, the total turnover increased mainly due to warehousing and support activities for transportation, where turnover increased by more than a quarter. An almost threefold increase in turnover of air transport also contributed to the overall growth, although it represent a less significant share of the total turnover. As for the industry's five activities, only two reached the level of turnover of two years ago.

In information and communication 4), turnover increased by 15.5 %, year-on-year, in August, compared to a period of two years ago, the increase exceeded the level of 10 %. In the year-on-year development, the most significant growth of turnover was in the most influential - computer programming by 22.6 %, but turnover increased in all six activities of the sector. Almost all of them also exceeded the level of two years ago, only motion picture, video and television program production lagged behind.

In selected market services 5), turnover increased by 3 %, year-on-year, it also lagged behind the period before the pandemic (August 2019) by approximately the same value. In the current month, total turnover increased, year-on-year, mainly due to a growth in administrative and support service activities by 27.7 %. However, it recorded a more than double year-on-year increase in travel agencies and tour operator activities, compared to the turnover of two years ago (August 2019), but it reached only a half of its volume. Most of the activities of selected market services continued to lag behind the pre-pandemic level.

Development in the eight months of 2021 compared to the same period in 2020

In total, in the eight months of 2021, turnover increased by 13.5 % in industry, year-on-year, it rose mainly in manufacture of transport equipment and in manufacture of metals equally by 18.7 % and in manufacture of machinery and equipment by 22.6 %. It also increased in transportation and storage by 13.2 % and in information and communication by 7%. Compared to the same period last year, turnover decreased by 0.5 % in construction and by 1 % in selected market services.
