In April compared with March, consumer prices remained unchanged in total, in April 2020 compared with April 2020, consumer prices increased by 2,1 % in total.

The calculation of the consumer price index in April was significantly affected by the situation associated with the COVID-19 crisis. The traditional field price survey was influenced by the closure of outlets and service operations and the cessation of field surveys. Uncollected prices were replaced by prices from other sources, e.g. websites, telephone and e-mail inquiries, or data scanner (food, alcoholic beverages) of retail chains have been used. Part of the uncollected prices was obtained by imputation - using the month-on-month index from the previous year (April 2019 / March 2019). More in the Methodological note HERE.

Price development in April compared to March 2020

Month on month. increased prices in the divisions of clothing and footwear by 1,3 %; food and non-alcoholic beverages by 0,7%; recreation and culture by 0,5 %; health by 0,4 %; furnishings, household equipment and routine maintenance of households; restaurants and hotels equally by 0,3 %; housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels; education equally by 0,1 %. Prices decreased in transport by 3,6 %; alcoholic beverages and tobacco by 0,7 %; miscellaneous goods and services by 0,2 %. Prices of communications remained at the level of March.

The month on month growth of food by 0,8 % were affected by a price rise of vegetables (including potatoes) by 6,1 %; fruit by 1,6 %; oils and fats by 1,4 %; bread and cereals by 1 %; milk, cheese and eggs by 0,3 %. Prices of fish dropped by 2,8 %; sugar, jam, honey, syrups, chocolates and confectionary; food products n.e.c equally by 0,5 %; meat by 0,2 %. Prices of non-alcoholic beverages fell by 0,5 % (prices of mineral water, soft drinks, fruit and vegetable juices decreased by 0,9 %, prices of coffee, tea and cocoa increased by 0,1 %).

A price decrease in the division of alcoholic beverages and tobacco was influenced by lower prices of alcoholic beverages by 1,3 % (spirits by 2,3 %, beer by 0,9 %, wine by 0,7 %). Prices of tobacco remained unchanged.

A price growth in the division of clothing and footwear was affected by higher prices of footwear by 1,9 %; clothing by 1,1 %.

Higher prices in the division of housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels were affected by a price rise in waste disposal by 0,9 %;  services related to maintenance and repair of the dwelling by 0,5 %; materials for maintenance and repair of the dwelling by 0,4 %; actual rentals paid by tenants; imputed rentals of owner-occupiers; other services related to the dwelling equally by 0,1 %. Prices of water supply; wastewater; electricity; gas; solid fuels; heat energy remained at the level of the previous month.

Higher prices in the division of furnishings, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house influenced a price increase in household appliances; glassware, tableware and household utensils equally by 0,4 %;  furnishings, carpets and other floor coverings; tools and equipment for house and garden equally by 0,3 %; goods and services for routine maintenance of household equally by 0,1 %. Prices of household textiles remained unchanged.

A price rise in the health division was influenced by higher prices of medical products, medical appliances and equipment by 0,5 % (pharmaceutical products by 0,6 %, therapeutic appliances and equipment by 0,4 %; other medical products by 0,1 %). Prices of outpatient services (prices of medical services, dental services remained unchanged, prices of middle medical staff services – thermal bath increased by 0,1 %); hospital services remained at the level of the previous month.

A price decrease in transport was caused by lower prices of operation of personal transport equipment by 6 % (prices of fuels and lubricants for personal transport equipment dropped by 8,2 %, spare parts and accessories by 0,5 %, prices of maintenance and repair rose by 0,5 %, other services related to personal transport equipment by 0,2 %); transport service activities by 1,9 % (passenger transport by air by 18,2 %, other purchased transport services by 0,5 %, prices of passenger transport by road remained unchanged). Prices of purchase of transport equipment increased by 0,3 % (prices of bikes rose by 1,2 %, new motor vehicles by 0,9 %, prices of second-hand motor vehicles dropped by 0,8 %)

In the division of communication prices of postal and telephone services were unchanged. Prices of telephone equipment rose by 0,2 %.

Higher prices in the division of recreation and culture were affected by an increase in prices of other recreational items and equipment for gardens and pets by 1,4 %; recreational services and culture by 1 %; package holidays by 0,2 %; audiovisual and photographic technology; other major durables for recreation and culture -musical instruments equally by 0,1 %. Prices of newspapers, books and stationery remained unchanged.

Higher prices in the education division were affected by an increase in prices of education not definable by level by 0,6 % (fee for language lessons by 1,2 %); pre-primary and primary education by 0,1 % (fee in kindergarten by 0,1 %). Prices of secondary; tertiary education were unchanged.

A price rise in the division of restaurants and hotels was influenced by an increase in prices of accommodation services by 0,5 %; catering services by 0,3 % (in restaurants, cafes, payment for meals in retirement homes equally by 0,3 %, in canteens by 0,1 %).

A decrease in prices in the division of miscellaneous goods and services was influenced by lower prices of personal care by 0,6 %. Prices of financial services n.e.c rose by 0,9 % (financial services provided by banks by 0,9 %); insurance by 0,7 % (insurance of motor vehicles by 1 %); personal effects n.e.c by 0,3 %; social protection by 0,2 % (payment in social service facilities, payment for care services equally by 0,4 %, payment in day care center by 0,1 %). Prices of other services n.e.c. remained unchanged.

Development of prices in April 2020 compared to April 2019

In April 2020 compared with April 2019, prices increased in the divisions of education by 5 %; food and non-alcoholic beverages by 4,3 %; miscellaneous goods and services by 3,8 %; housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels; recreation and culture equally by 2,5 %; communication by 2,1 %; furniture and furnishings and routine household maintenance by 2 %; restaurants and hotels by 1,8 %; health by 1,3 %; alcoholic beverages and tobacco; clothing and footwear equally by 1,1 %. Prices dropped in transport by 5,9 %.

On average, over the first four months of 2020 compared with the same period of 2019, consumer prices increased by 2,6 % in total. 

In April compared with March index of consumer prices increased in households of pensioners rose by 0,1 %, in households of employees and in low-income households it remained unchanged.

In April 2020, index of consumer prices increased, year-on-year, in households of employees by 2 %, households of pensioners by 2,4 % and in low-income households by 2,2 %.

On average, over the first four months of 2020 compared with the same period of 2019, index of consumer prices increased in households of employees by 2,5 %, in household of pensioners by 2,8 % and in low-income households by 2,7 %.
