In April, trade turnover was catching up the pre-Covid level

Retail turnover in April 2021 exceeded the previous year's level by more than one tenth, but April 2020 was already fully affected by the pandemic. Turnover of hypermarkets was lower than a year ago, on the contrary, turnover of sellers in specialized stores (with footwear, textiles or drugstores) was also significantly higher, also for online shopping and mail order services.

In April 2021, turnover of retail trade again was higher by 11,5 %. While in March, turnover was increasing very slightly, in April, higher values were recorded, due to the facts that in April 2020 their decline was significantly deeper due to the closed service operations.

Currently, from the nine of the monitored retail activities, the year-on-year turnover growth was recorded in six of them, but only two reached the level of April turnover in 2019 - specialized stores for households (hobby markets) and in other retail sale not in stores, stalls or markets. While the rates of decline and growth of trade components reach high percentages, depending on how great decline they experienced a year ago, as they managed to return to the pre-pandemic level, or achieve even higher turnover during the last 12 months.

As a result of high declines last year, significant values ​​of turnover growth of motor vehicle were recorded, which doubled in April 2021 (in April last year, their drop was more than 57 %). April turnover of accommodation providers and of restaurants and of beverage service activities recorded an increase compared to last pandemic April, compared to April 2019, turnover of accommodation providers lagged behind by more than 80 % and turnover of restaurants and hotels by less than 40 %.

The turnover development from own services and goods increased month-on-month in April 2021 compared with the previous month in all main activities of internal trade, with the exception of wholesale. The most significant growth was by more than 30 % in restaurants and beverage service activities (by 35,7 %) and also in accommodation (by 30,8 %). Turnover also increased month-on-month in the sale and repair of motor vehicles by 10,8 % and in retail trade by 3 %. There was a decrease only in wholesale by 1,9 %.

Development in April 2021 compared to April 2020

Retail turnover increased by 11,5 % in April 2021. Sectors recording significant drops in the corresponding period last year experienced a growth, but compared to April 2019, many of them did not reach its level. Turnover in April 2021 increased the most significantly to the sellers of other goods in specialized stores, which inter alia include turnover of footwear, textiles and drugstores, an increase by 25,1 %, which exceeded the level of the previous year, but did not reach the level of 2019. Turnover in the most important activity, in retail trade in non-specialized stores (hyper and supermarkets), although turnover decreased by 1,8 % year-on-year, though they exceeded the level of April 2019.

The overall growth of April turnover was significantly supported by year-on-year higher turnover in retail trade in specialized household stores by 35,6 %, at the same time exceeding the level of April 2019. A similarly important growth was recorded also in retail sale outside stores, stalls and markets (including inter alia also retail sale via mail order or via Internet), not only in year-on-year level (by 15,4 %), but also exceeded the level of April 2019 by 10 %. Turnover in retail trade of fuels and in specialized retail sale of ICT equipment reached year-on-year growth above 10 %, but compared to April two years ago, they were in a 10 % decrease.

Of the selected more detailed retail activities 2), turnover in clothing stores increased up to threefold and in footwear and in leather goods stores by 2,5 times year-on-year. Turnover in stores with tobacco products also increased by 7,9 %. Lower turnover was still recorded in retail stores of meat and meat products, decreasing by 34,6 % year-on-year.

Turnover from the sale and repair of motor vehicles grew almost twice as much as last year. All three components of this group of internal trade contributed to the year-on-year growth. Turnover of motor vehicles doubled, due to the deferred purchases of motor vehicles and turnover is thus slowly catching up to the level of 2019. Repair and maintenance of motor vehicles was successful, turnover increased by 27,9 % year-on-year, they increased approximately similarly compared with April 2019.

Wholesale turnover developed favourably, the April's growth was by 22,1 %. Turnover increased the most in the most important activities, namely in other specialized wholesale by 47,1 % and in non-specialized wholesale by 29,6 %.

Compared to the declines last year, turnover in accommodation grew by 17,4 %, and it also slightly increased in restaurants and beverage service activities by 1,2 %. However, they are still well below the level of two years ago.

Development for the first four months of 2021 compared to the corresponding period in 2020

In summary, in the four months of 2021, turnover in sale and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles increased by 15 %, and also increased in wholesale by 8,6 %. Compared to the corresponding period last year, retail turnover decreased by 5,1 %.

The turnover decline in accommodation was at the level of 77,4 %, turnover in the activities of restaurants and beverage service activities reached only half of the volume of turnover last year (a decrease by 43 %).
