In September, turnover in industry, information and communication, transport and selected market services reached the level of the previous year, but in construction it dropped faster

The September rate of the year-on-year decline of turnover in industry, transportation and information and communication slowed to less than 1,5 % and in selected market services below 3 %. The exception was construction, in which the decline of turnover deepened in the year-on-year comparison. Turnover increased significantly month-on-month, especially in transportation.

Of the individual activities, the largest decrease of turnover was recorded in September in the activities of travel agencies and offices, their turnover was lower by 78,4 % year-on-year. Gaming and betting offices were the most successful, with turnover growing the most since April 2015, and in September they were almost by 30 % higher year-on-year.

Development in September 2020 compared to August 2020 1)

Turnover developed favorably in September compared to August, with month-on-month growth in transportation and storage by 5,1 %, information and communication activities by 3,6 %, industry by 2,9 % and in selected market services by 2,3 %. The decrease was only in construction, but compared to the previous month, turnover dropped very slightly by 0,1 %.

Development in September 2020 compared to September 2019

Turnover in industry decreased by 0,3 % year-on-year. Of the 16 surveyed components of the industry or special groupings of industries, nine of them had a lower turnover than last year and in seven of them the turnover exceeded the level of last September. The most significant decrease was recorded in the manufacture of coke and petroleum products by 29,4 %, in the supply of electricity and gas by 5,7 %, and in the manufacture of textiles and leather by 16,2 %.

The overall result was also affected by higher year-on-year turnover, especially in the manufacture of transport equipment by 4,6 %, electrical equipment by 4,1 % and in the manufacture of wood products by 3 %.

Turnover in construction have remained below the last year's level since the corona crisis, but the September drop by 19,7 % was the largest in this period (it is also the largest decline since October 2016).

The decline of turnover in transportation and storage 2), which has persisted since December last year, continued in September, but its pace slowed to 1,3 %. The overall decline was mainly due to the continuing significant decrease in warehousing and support activities for transportation, which again exceeded 10 % in September (a decrease by 10,7%), but it is the lowest in the last seven months. Year-on-year, turnover was also lower in air transport. After the decline brought by the corona crisis, turnover in land and transport via pipelines grew for the second month in a row. In September, they increased by 9,3 %, which had a positive effect on the development of total turnover. It was also supported by a growth in postal and courier services.

After more significant drops in the previous four months, turnover in information and communication activities 3) in September returned to the level of the previous year, with a year-on-year decline by 0,4 %. The favorable development was mainly influenced by the year-on-year increase of turnover in publishing activities by 11,4 % and in telecommunications by 0,6 %. The overall decline was mainly due to lower turnover in information services by 10 %, their year-on-year decline was even more significant than in August.

The level of last year's turnover did not reach the level of turnover in selected market services 4) in September either, but even here their decline slowed down to 2,9 %. The drop was mostly due to low turnover in the activities of travel agencies and offices, which for the fifth month in a row did not reach even a quarter of last year's turnover, it fell by 78,4 % year-on-year in September. The deepening drop in turnover from legal and accounting activities also had a significant impact, by 13 % in September. The overall decrease mitigated the turnover growth in the activities of gaming and betting offices, they were higher by 29,1 % year-on-year, it is the largest increase since April 2015.

Development for the nine months of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019

In the nine months, turnover decreased in construction by 11,7 % compared to the same period in 2019.

In transportation and storage, turnover decreased by 10,1 % year-on-year, it dropped in all activities, except postal and courier services.

The turnover increased in information and communication by 0,4 % due to a growth in computer programming by 5,9 %.
