Construction output increased by 1 % year-on-year, the lag behind the pre-pandemic period was lower

The year-on-year development maintained growth of the comparable year-on-year volumes of work in the less significant component of domestic construction - repair and maintenance works, and in the persistently higher volume of the works realized abroad.

In November 2021, construction enterprises achieved output1) in the total volume2) of EUR 588,5 million, in year-on-year comparison it increased by 1 %. It was the fifth consecutive month of 2021, when construction performance surpassed last year. Current construction work also lagged behind the pre-pandemic period (compared to November 2019), but only by 8,4 % (at constant prices). The Statistical Office of the SR releases comparisons with the corresponding pre-pandemic period in order to provide a more comprehensive picture of the impact of the pandemic on the sector.

Month-on-month, after seasonal adjustments, construction output was higher by 4,9 % than in October 2021.

The most important construction work carried out in Slovakia (representing 89 % of construction output) again showed a year-on-year decrease by 3,6 % in November 2021. However, the lag behind the corresponding pre-pandemic period was less significant than during the previous months, reaching 14 % (last month it was almost 25 %). The development on the domestic construction market was the result of a year-on-year decrease mainly in of the less significant new construction3) by 6,4 %) and a year-on-year approximately equal volume of repair and maintenance works (a decrease by only 0,3 %).

In terms of output specification, the volume of work on buildings decreased by 1 % compared with November 2020, also on civil engineering by 8,1 %. At the same time, both components lagged behind significantly below the pre-pandemic values (in November 2019), especially in case of works on buildings (by 17 %).

Output realized abroad is significantly higher year-on-year, almost since the beginning of the 2021 construction season, currently in the eleventh month by 62 % and reached almost double the value before the pandemic. However, cross-border output is a less significant component of the total volume of construction output (current share is around 11 %).

Construction output in the eleven months of 2021 reached a volume of almost EUR 4,8 billion, compared to the corresponding period last year it was lower by 2,3 % and at the same time by 15 % lower compared with the corresponding period in 2019. Its development was influenced mainly by the year-on-year decline in new construction 3) in Slovakia (by more than 8 %), and approximately the same output (a growth by 0,6 %) in repair and maintenance works. On the contrary, before the deeper slump, the construction balance was saved by construction activities abroad, which in total were a third higher than a year ago and at the same time by 43 % higher than in the pre-pandemic period (a summary of 11 months in 2019).

  • 1) construction output includes the volume of work performed by own employees, including an estimate of output for self-employed persons and construction plants of non-construction enterprises
  • 2) absolute data are at current prices, indices are calculated from constant prices (average prices of 2015)
  • 3) new construction - construction in terms of renewals and enhancements
