In March, compared with the corresponding period last year, the total export of goods decreased by 18,5 % to EUR 5 933,9 million and the total import by 10,1 % to EUR 6 324,3 million. The foreign trade balance was in deficit in the amount of EUR 390,3 million.

In the first quarter of 2020, the foreign trade balance was in deficit in the amount of EUR 284,2 million.

The Slovak Republic had the highest positive balance with Germany (EUR 1 208,7 million), the United Kingdom (EUR 752,8 million), France (EUR 561,9 million),  Austria (EUR 503,9 million),  Poland (EUR 424,7 million), Italy (EUR 288,5 million), USA (EUR 250,2 million), Hungary (EUR 241,6 million), Spain (EUR 218,4 million) and the Czech Republic (EUR 214,3 million). The highest deficit was recorded with Vietnam (EUR 973,8 million), the Republic of Korea (EUR 950,9 million), China (EUR 905,5 million), the Russian Federation (EUR 902,8 million), Malaysia (EUR 107,6 million), Taiwan (EUR 87,7 million) and Japan (EUR 80,8 million).

Goods in the amount of EUR 19 169,8 million were exported from the Slovak Republic. Compared with corresponding period of 2019, the total export decreased by 7,4 %.

In terms of goods, a decrease was recorded the most in export of motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for transport of persons by EUR 595,3 million, monitors and projectors, reception apparatus for television by EUR 248,5 million, flat-rolled products of iron or non-alloy steel, hot rolled by EUR 108,5 million and new rubber tires by EUR 67,5 million. Export of other lifting, handling, loading or unloading machinery (for example: lifts, escalators, conveyors, teleferics) increased by EUR 36,4 million, railway or tramway goods vans and wagons by EUR 24,1 million, automatic data processing machines or units thereof by EUR 22,7 million and wires and cables by EUR 21,2 million.

Within the most significant trade partners, export decreased to Germany by 9 %, the Czech Republic by 9,2 %, Poland by 2,3 %, France by 0,9 %, Austria by 8,9 %, United Kingdom by 3,9 %, Italy by 13,8 %, Spain by 8,2 %, USA by 44,2 %, Romania by 4,8 % and the Netherlands by 8,1 %. Export increased to Hungary by 1,3 %.

In terms of the main economic groupings, export to the EU countries decreased by 6,2 % (it represented 79,4 % of the total export of the SR) and to the OECD countries by 7,8 % (it represented 88,2 % of the total export of the SR).  

Goods in the amount of EUR 19 454 million were imported to the Slovak Republic with a year-on-year increase of 2,8 %.

In terms of goods, a decrease was considerable in import of petroleum gases and other gaseous hydrocarbons by EUR 148 million, wires and cables by EUR 121,5 million, motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for transport of persons by EUR 100,3 million and spark-ignition reciprocating or rotary internal combustion piston engines by EUR 73,2 million. Import of electric accumulators, including separators rose by EUR 208,5 million, medicaments by EUR 56 million, monitors and projectors, television reception apparatus by EUR 44,3 million and  telephone sets, including telephones for cellular networks by EUR 38,9 million.

In relation to the most significant trade partners, import decreased from Germany by 8,6 %, the Czech Republic by 9,9 %, the Russian Federation by 14,3 %, Poland by 4,9 %, the Republic of Korea by 3 %, Hungary by 2,3 %, Vietnam by 1,2 %, Italy by 15 % and Austria by 8,4 %. Import increased from China by 0,2 %, France by 15,7 % and United Kingdom by 15,3 %.

In terms of the main economic groupings, import from the EU countries decreased by 1,7 % (it represented 65,7 % of the total import of the SR) and from the OECD countries by 6,7 % (it represented 63,2 % of the total import of the SR), compared with the corresponding period of 2019.


Note: Data are preliminary, at current prices in the FOB-type value. Information was processed by the Statistical Office of the SR on the basis of data from the Customs Section of the Financial Directorate of the SR obtained within the customs clearance and INTRASTAT-SK declarations, which are provided by consignee and consignor of goods.
EU data are without the United Kingdom since January 2020.
