In December 2018, compared with December 2017, the total export of goods increased by 3,7 % to EUR 5 717,7 million and the total import rose by 4,8 % to EUR 5 827,3 million. The foreign trade balance was in deficit in the amount of EUR 109,6 million.

In 2018, the foreign trade balance was in surplus in the amount of EUR 2 459,6 million.

The Slovak Republic had the highest active balance with Germany (EUR 4 023,1 million), the United Kingdom (EUR 2 676,3 million), France (EUR 2 672,8 million), Austria (EUR 2 191,7 million), Italy (EUR 1 971,3 million), USA (EUR 1 898,4 million),  Poland (EUR 1 809,9 million), the Czech Republic (EUR 1 539,4 million), Spain (EUR 1 079,5 million), Romania (EUR 887,3 million) and Hungary (EUR 757,9 million).

The largest passive balance was recorded with Vietnam
(EUR 4 459,4 million), the Republic of Korea (EUR 4 338,6 million), China (EUR 3 144,3 million), the Russian Federation (EUR 2 548,9 million), Malaysia (EUR 478,7 million), Taiwan (EUR 413,4 million), Japan (EUR 337,3 million), Ukraine (EUR 200,7 million)  and with India (EUR 199,4 million).

Goods in the amount of EUR 79 785,6 million were exported from the Slovak Republic. Compared with corresponding period of 2017, the total export grew by 6,7 %.

In terms of goods, the increase was recorded in export of motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for transport of persons by EUR 4 105,6 million, electrical lighting or signaling equipment by EUR 262,9 million, wires and cables by EUR 158,5 million, machines and mechanical appliances having individual functions by EUR 118,8 million.

The highest decrease was recorded in export of monitors and projectors, reception apparatus for television by EUR 494,7 million, bodies for motor vehicles by EUR 406,3 million, telephone sets including telephones for cellular networks by EUR 185 million, parts and accessories suitable for transmission apparatus for radio-broadcasting or television by EUR 156,2 million.

Relating the most significant trade partners, export increased to Germany by 15,3 %, the Czech Republic by 9,8 %, Poland by 5,8 %, France by 6,7 %, Italy by 2,2 %, Austria by 1,6 %, USA by 25,3 %, Spain by 2,2 %, Romania by 9,9 % and the Russian Federation by 0,9 %. Export decreased to Hungary by 1,8 %, United Kingdom by 6,9 % and the Netherlands by 8 %.

In terms of the main economic groupings, the export to the EU countries rose by 6,5 % (it represented 85,2 % of the total export of the SR) and to the OECD countries by 6,5 % (it represented 88,7 % of the total export of the SR).  

Goods amounted to the value of EUR 77 326 million were imported to the Slovak Republic with a year-on-year growth of 7,8 %.

In terms of goods, the increase was registered in import of parts and accessories of the motor vehicles by EUR 1 894,3 million, wires and cables by EUR 564,7 million, compression-ignition internal combustion piston engines by EUR 485,1 million and petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals, crude by EUR 465,4 million.

The significant drop was recorded in import of products of liquid crystals by EUR 376,4 million and monitors and projectors, television reception apparatus by EUR 287,8 million.

In relation to the most significant trade partners, the import increased from Germany by 13,7 %, the Czech Republic by 5,5 %, Vietnam by 16,3 %, the Republic of Korea by 9,1 %, Poland by 10,4 %, the Russian Federation by 21,5 %, Hungary by 5,2 %, Italy by 9 %, France by 3,2 % and Austria by 8,8 %. Import decreased from China by 15,1 %.

In terms of the main economic groupings, the import from the EU countries grew by 9,4 % (it represented 67,6 % of the total import) and from the OECD countries by 7,5 % (it represented 66,9 % of the total import of the SR), compared with the corresponding period of 2017.

Information was processed by the Statistical Office of the SR on the basis of data from the Customs Section of the Financial Directorate of the SR obtained within the customs clearance and INTRASTAT-SK declarations, which are provided by consignee and consignor of goods.
From January 2018, Lithuana (from 5.7.2018 is a OECD member) is included to OECD data.
