Retail turnover was higher year-on-year in September for the third month in a row, the growth rate accelerated to 5,8 %, which is the highest in the last two years.

After kick-starting in the summer months, the growth rate of turnover even accelerated in September, the overall year-on-year growth reached 5,8 %, which was the highest since October 2018. Turnover grew almost in all retail activities, the overall growth was supported for the first time since the pandemic also by the turnover in automotive fuel in specialized stores, it increased by 0,6 %. Turnover in  accommodation remained well below last year's turnover, falling by almost 30 % in September. Turnover in the sale and repair of motor vehicles continued to decline.

Compared with August, turnover rose in the majority of the main business activities, in sale and repair of motor vehicles by 2,4 %, in retail trade by 1,3 % and in wholesale by 0,1 %.The month-on-month drop of turnover was recorded in accommodation by 19,9 % and in activities of restaurants and beverage service activities by 5,3 %.

Development in September 2020 compared with September 2019

In September, turnover in retail trade also exceeded the last year´s level, with an increase of 5,8 %, reaching even the fastest growth since October 2018.

Turnover rose in almost all retail activities, most notably in retail trade in non-specialized stores ((hypermarkets and supermarkets) where they rose by 8,6 %, year-on-year. The year-on-year growth in retail trade of outside stores, stalls and markets, whose turnover grew by 18,9 %, which was the highest since January last year. For the first time since the onset of the pandemic, i.e. after six months of decline, retail sales of automotive fuels in specialized stores increased by 0, 6 %. Turnover in retail trade of food, beverages and tobacco was below the level of last year's turnover, the September´s drop by 10,7 % was the second largest  this year. Since the end of last year, turnover in stalls and markets have been declining, in September they dropped by 32 %, year-on-year.

Within them, despite the growth of total retail turnover, year-on-year turnover in retail stores with footwear and leather goods decreased by 7 % and in stores with clothing by 3,2 %. Turnover of meat and meat products also decreased by 14,1 %, as well as of tobacco products by 0,7 %.

Since the beginning of the year, the year-on-year decline of turnover in sale and repairs of motor vehicles and motorcycles continued, falling in September by 9 %. It dropped in sale of motor vehicles by 9,8 % and in sale of spare parts and accessories of motor vehicles by 15,7 %. Turnover in repair and maintenance of motor vehicles was higher by 9,6 %.

In wholesale, turnover grew year-on-year for the fourth month in a row, increasing by 3,9 % in September, growing the most in non-specialized wholesale by 19,6 % and in wholesale of household goods by 12,1 %.

In September, the decline of turnover in accommodation was at the level of 29,4 %. After a favourable development in the summer months, the turnover growth in the activities of restaurants and beverage services continued in September, turnover increased by 3 % year-on-year.

Development over the first nine months of 2020 compared with the corresponding period of 2019

For the first nine months of 2020, turnover in sale and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles dropped by 18,2 %. A turnover in wholesale rose only slightly, compared with the corresponding period last year by 0,9 %.  In retail trade, turnover decreased by 1,7 %, year-on-year.

Turnover in accommodation decreased by 38,2 % since the beginning of the year, in the activities of restaurant and beverage services, in total by 5,1 %.
