Industrial production closely approximated the last year's volume, but still did not exceed it

The rate of year-on-year decline in industrial production was decreasing for the fifth month in a row, reaching only 0,2 % in September 2020. The manufacture of transport equipment was slightly higher, the year-on-year recovery was reflected in seven of the 15 components of industry 1) as well as in August.

Compared to September 2019, in September 2020 the industrial production of the Slovak Republic was lower by 0,2 % year-on-year, which was the lowest year-on-year decrease in the last eight months.

Among the 15 monitored components of industry 1) - or their special groupings, the higher performance than in September 2019 was reflected in seven of them, at the same time in eight of them the volume of production lagged behind last year's level.

The most significant overall result of production was influenced by a decrease in the manufacture of electrical equipment by 7,5 % and in the manufacture of machinery as well. n. by 6,1 %. After four months of high growths caused by the last year's shutdown at one of the producers, there was also a decline in the production of coke and refined petroleum products by 9,9 %. The decrease of more than 10 % was reflected in two groups of industries with a lower share in the manufacture of industry, namely in the manufacture of textiles and leather by 21,2 % and in the manufacture of chemicals by 14,2 %.

At the same time, total production was affected by an increase in the manufacture of transport equipment by 0,3 %. They also recorded higher production than in September 2019 in the supply of electricity and gas by 13,4 %, in the manufacture of wood products by 17,8 % and in mining and quarrying by 13,3 %.

According to the main industrial groupings, compared to September 2019, the production of durable goods decreased by 4,7 %, the production of non-durable goods by 2,6 %, the production of capital goods by 1,4 % and the production for intermediate consumption by 0, 7 %. Energy-related production was higher by 7,8 %.

On a month-on-month basis, after seasonal adjustments (in September 2020 compared to August 2020), industrial production increased by 3,3 %.

In summary, in the nine months since the beginning of the year, industrial production fell by 12,7 % year on year.

The most significant decrease was reflected in the manufacture of transport equipment by 22,4%, in the manufacture of machinery n.e.c. by 16,5 % and in manufacture of rubber and plastic products by 12,8 %. Production increased in electricity and gas supply by 4,1 %, in coke and petroleum products production by 15,4 % and in mining and quarrying by 6,2 %.

According to the main industrial groupings, the production of durable goods decreased by 21,9 %, the production of capital goods by 20,2 %, the production of non-durable goods by 10,7 % and the production for intermediate consumption by 10,3 %. Energy-related production was higher by 5%.

Data are adjusted from the influence of the number of working days by program JDEMETRA+ and during processing of every month they are back-casted from the beginning of the time series. In September 2020, the number of working days was by 1 day higher than in the corresponding period of 2019 and also since the beginning of the year.
