In April visits to hotels and boarding houses were one third ahead of March but still rose to only 11 % of the pre-pandemic values

The release of measures at the end of April had a positive effect on the increase in the number of domestic tourists and foreigners, the number of guests reached 50 thousand, but before the pandemic (in April 2019) it was up to 442 thousand visitors.

The number of visits and overnight stays in hotels, boarding houses and other accommodation establishments in the SR in April 2021 was about a third higher than in March, but still lagged significantly behind the values before the pandemic (in April 2019). The accommodation establishments were visited by 50 thousand people, which was by 89 % less than the number of visitors two years ago in April. The number of overnight stays reached 193,6 thousand nights, which was by 83 % less than in April 2019. Two years ago (in April 2019), up to 442 thousand visitors used the accommodation services and reported 1,1 million overnight stays.

Year-on-year, both parameters achieved high growths, a 7,5-fold increase in the number of visits and a 5,5-fold increase in the number of overnight stays, but these comparisons are fundamentally influenced by the almost zero comparison base in April a year ago. It is more important to compare the extent to which the current number of visits is catching up with the situation during the corresponding period two or three years ago. Last April was the weakest month in the long run due to the measures during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, with an absolute drop in attendance.

A significant majority of visitors in the SR in April were also domestic tourists, representing 86,2 % of the number of accommodated visitors (43 thousand people). In April, the most domestic tourists visited Žilinský kraj, Bratislavský kraj and  Prešovský kraj.

At the same time, accommodation establishments were visited by 7 thousand foreign visitors in April; a year before the pandemic (April 2019), their number exceeded 171 thousand. The number of overnight stays recorded 20 thousand nights a year. Compared to the previous month, accommodation was used by 16 % more foreign guests. Measures against COVID-19 affect the most the cross-border travel. The number of visitors in the tourist attractive regions, Prešov, Banská Bystrica and Žilina, reached only a quarter of the number of foreign visitors to Slovakia. The highest number of foreign visitors were in the regions of Bratislava, Trnava and Nitra.

In total, for the months of January to April 2021, 140,2 thousand visitors were accommodated in tourism establishments, which represents a year-on-year decrease by 87,1 %. The number of domestic visitors decreased by 83,4 % year-on-year in four months and the number of foreigners by 93,9 %.

Note: statistics of accommodation establishments contain data from all legal entities and natural persons with assigned Iden-tification Number, which are kept in the Register of Accommodation Establishments of the SO SR and provide temporary tourist accommodation.
