In January compared with December, consumer prices increased by 0,3 %, in total, compared with January 2020 they rose by 0,7 %.

In January, the calculation of the consumer price index was significantly affected by the situation associated with the corona crisis. The traditional field price survey was influenced by the closure of selected stores and service operations. Undiscovered prices were replaced by prices from other sources, e.g. websites, telephone and e-mail inquiries. Part of the prices were resolved by post-imputation. Due to a decrease of regulated prices for the network industries and a lower growth of food prices in January, inflation reached 0,7% compared to the previous year, which last happened in January 2017, and food reported a negative value of -0,6 % last time in 10 months of 2016, when there was a deflation.

Development of consumer prices in January 2021 compared to December 2020

Month-on-month, prices in the division of communications increased by 7 %; transport by 2,8 %; food and non-alcoholic beverages; recreation and culture equally by 1,1 %; education by 0,5 %; health care by 0,4 %; alcoholic beverages and tobacco by 0,3 %; furniture, furnishings and routine household maintenance; restaurants and hotels; miscellaneous goods and services equally by 0,2 %. Prices of housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels decreased by 1,8 %; clothing and footwear by 0,5 %.

Price increase of food by 0,9 % was influenced by higher fruit prices by 3,4 %; vegetables (including potatoes) by 2,2 %; fish by 1,9 %; oils and fats by 1,1 %; sugar, jam, honey, syrups, chocolate and confectionery by 0,9 %; bread and cereals by 0,8 %; food products n.e.c. by 0,7 %; milk, cheese and eggs by 0,4 %; meat by 0,1 %. Prices of non-alcoholic beverages increased by 3 % (mineral waters, non-alcoholic beverages and juices by 3,8 %, coffee, tea and cocoa by 1,9 %).

Higher prices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco were caused by an increase in prices of alcoholic beverages by 0,5 % (beer by 1 %, spirits by 0,4 %).

A decrease in prices in the division of clothing and footwear was influenced by lower prices of footwear by 0,9 %; clothing by 0,4 %.

A decrease in prices of housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels was caused by lower gas prices by 9,6 %; electricity by 4,3 %; solid fuels; heat energy equally by 1 %. Refuse collection prices increased by 3,7 %; services for the maintenance and repair of the dwelling by 0,5 %; imputed rental of the owner-occupiers; materials for the maintenance and repair of the dwelling; other services related to the dwelling equally by 0,1 %.

An increase in prices in the division of furniture, furnishings and routine household maintenance was influenced by higher prices of goods and services for routine household maintenance by 1,1 %; glassware, tableware and household utensils by 0,1 %. Prices of tools and equipments for the house and garden decreased by 1,1 %; household textiles by 0,5 %; furniture, furnishings, carpets and other floor coverings by 0,2 %; household appliances by 0,1 %.

Higher prices in the division of  health care were influenced by an increase in prices of medical products, medical appliances and equipment (other medical products by 0,6 %, pharmaceutical products by 0,4 %, therapeutic appliances and equipment by 0,2 % ); outpatient services equally by 0,4 % (dental services by 0,4 %, medical services by 0,3 %); hospital services by 0,2 %.

A rise in prices in transport was influenced by an increase in prices of purchase of transport equipment by 5,1 %; operation of passenger transport equipment by 2,2 % (fuels and lubricants for passenger transport equipment by 2,9 %, maintenance and repairs by 0,6 %, other services related to passenger transport equipment by 0,3 %); transport services by 1,5 %.

An increase in prices in the division of communications was caused by higher prices of telephone services by 7,7 %; telephone equipment by 0,1 %.

Higher prices in the division of recreation and culture were influenced by an increase in prices of newspapers, books and stationery by 3,2 %; other needs and equipment for recreation, garden and pets by 0,4 %; package holidays by 0,2 %; recreational services and culture by 0,1 %.

An increase in prices in the division of education was caused by higher prices of pre-primary; primary education by 1,8 % (fees in kindergarten by 2,4 %, fee for school club for children by 0,3 %); education indefinable by level by 0,3 % (fee in basic art school by 0,4 %, fee in language school, fee for language course equally by 0,3 %).

A rise in prices in the division of restaurants and hotels was influenced by an increase in prices of catering services by 0,2 % (in restaurants, cafés by 0,3 %, payments for meals in canteens for pensioners by 0,1 %); accommodation services by 0,1 %.

Higher prices in the division of  miscellaneous goods and services were caused by an increase in prices of insurance by 2,2 % (insurance relating to housing by 3,6 %, insurance relating to transport by 2,1 %, insurance relating to health by 0,2 % ); social protection by 0,5 % (payment for the provision of care services by 1,6 %, fee in private nurse by 0,4 %, payment for day care by 0,2 %, payment in social services facilities by 0,1 % ); other services n.e.c. by 0,4 %.

In January, compared to December, the consumer price index increased in households of employees by 0,3 %, households of pensioners by 0,1 %, in low-income households by 0,2 %.

In year-on-year comparison, prices in the division of communications increased by 7 %; restaurants and hotels; miscellaneous goods and services equally by 3,4 %; healthcare by 3,3 %; education by 3 %; recreation and culture by 2,1 %; furniture, furnishings and routine household maintenance by 1,5 %; clothing and footwear by 1,2 %; alcoholic beverages and tobacco by 0,8 %. Prices decreased in transport by 2,3 %; housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels by 1,1 %; food and non-alcoholic beverages by 0,5 %.

In the division of communications,  prices of telephone services increased by 7,7 %, in restaurants and hotels, there is an increase in prices of restaurants and cafés by 4,3 %. In the division of miscellaneous goods and services, prices of hairdressing and beauty services are higher by 6,5 %, financial services n.e.c. by 3,9 %, social protection by 3,8 %. In health care, prices of dental services increased by 5,8 %, other health care products by 4,4 %, therapeutic appliances and equipment by 4,3 % and pharmaceutical products by 2,9 %. In education, prices were higher  in pre-primary; primary education by 4,8 %, education indefinable by level by 4,5 %. In the division of recreation and culture, prices of newspapers, books and stationery increased by 5,1 % and prices of audiovisual and photographic equipment decreased by 0,7 %. A decrease in prices in transport is caused by a drop in prices of fuels and lubricants for passenger transport equipment by 8,9 %, prices of maintenance and repairs increased by 5,5 % and road passenger transport by 4,1 %. In the division of housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels,  there is a January´s decrease in prices of electricity, gas, other fuels by 4,7 %, but also an increase in prices of refuse collection by 6,1 %, maintenance and repair of dwellings by 3,7 % , sewerage by 3,6 %, water supply by 1,9 %. In food, prices of vegetables decreased by 5,2 %, fruit by 4,2 %, oils and fats by 2 %, meat by 0,3 %, prices of food products not elsewhere classified increased by 2,8 %, fish by 2,1 %, bread and cereals by 1,2 %. Prices of coffee, tea and cocoa increased by 2,2 %, prices of mineral waters, non-alcoholic beverages and juices decreased by 0,7 %.

In January 2021, the consumer price index increased year-on-year in household of employees by 0,8 %, households of pensioners by 0,5 %  and in low-income households by 0,6 %.
