In November, turnover of retail trade continued to lag behind, year-on-year, but it was milder than the previous two months
In November 2022, retail turnover was lower than a year ago, but this decline was only moderate. Hyper- and supermarkets remained in negative numbers again. On the contrary, turn-over of petrol stations was higher.
In November 2022, retail turnover reached a lower value by 1.4% than in the same period a year ago. However, the decline, which continued for the fourth month in a row, slowed down its dynamics. Year-on-year, lower turnover at constant prices1) was recorded by up to 5 out of 9 activities of the retail trade.
The overall result was mainly influenced by lower turnover of 1.7% in the decisive component of retail trade, which covers hyper- and supermarkets, and it was also supported by a significant decrease in turnover in less important components of retail trade. Turnover in stores with household goods such as hobby markets, furniture or consumer electronics stores, as well as in stores focused on culture and recreation (bookstores, sporting goods and toy stores, etc.) decreased by more than 8%.
On the contrary, turnover growth of 5.6% was recorded by the second most significant component of retail trade – specialized stores with other goods (e.g. textiles, shoes, drugstores). After a six-month struggle with inflation of fuel prices, turnover of petrol stations turned positive. This turnover increased by 6%. Turnover in food, beverage and tobacco stores also increased at almost the same rate.
After three months, turnover of retail sale not in stores, stalls or markets, which also cover mail order sales, reached positive numbers.
