Passenger transport continued to grow in November and people travelled also longer distances than a year ago
In November, the number of passengers in passenger transport was the second highest in 2022, and transport performance increased in both rail and road transport. On the other hand, the freight transport performance was only catching up to the level of values in 2021 for the fifth month.
In November 2022, passenger transport again recorded an increase in the number of transported passengers, their number rose by 27.5% year-on-year. The eleventh month was the second best in 2022 and recorded 57.5 million transported persons. Compared to the last year, railways recorded a higher passenger growth rate, the number of passengers increased by 47.1% in trains. However, road transport was still decisive - almost 89% share in passenger transport.

Passenger transport performances, in which the length of the journeys are also taken into account, reached 748 million passenger kilometres in November 2022 and compared to the last year they were higher by more than 40%. The higher year-on-year growth was influenced by an increase in transport distances, especially in rail transport, where the number of passenger kilometres travelled increased by 64.1%.
In total, in the eleven months, the number of passengers travelled by passenger transport was by one third higher than a year ago. After taking into account the transport distances, the number of passenger kilometres increased almost by a half.
Freight transport continued to stagnate
The volume of freight transport decreased year-on-year in November 2022. A total of 18.2 million tons of goods were transported, which decreased by 9% year-on-year. From the point of view of the volume of transported goods, November was a below-average month of the last year. All modes of freight transport recorded a year-on-year decrease. Goods transported by rail transport decreased by 11.2% (2.9 million tons), by road transport by 2.9% (12.6 million tons) and other modes of transport reached a drop of up to 28.3% (2.7 million tons).
A significant component - road transport, which accounted for almost 70% of the transported tons of goods, decreased the most moderately among other components of freight transport year-on-year. Enterprises1) transported almost 12.6 million tons by road, which was by 2.9% less than a year ago. Starting with the data from April 2022, the Statistical Office of the SR adjusted the monthly outputs (tables) on road freight transport2) so that freight transport parameters are reported together for all enterprises, regardless of the main business activity. The volume of goods transported by rail also decreased by 11.2% year-on-year. More than a sixth of transported goods were transported by train.
In November 2022, freight transport performances, taking into account also the transport distance, reached 3.1 billion tonne kilometres (tkm). Year-on-year, they only slightly decreased by 0.8%.
In total, in the eleven months of 2022, lower volume of goods by 2.1 % was transported in freight transport compared to the same period of 2021. After taking into account the transport distances, the current performances rose by 1.7% year-on-year.
Development of turnover, employment and wages in November 2022
Turnover3) in transportation and storage increased by approximately 20% year-on-year in November 2022. The result was mainly influenced by an increase in the most important land transport and transport via pipeline, as well as the second largest component - warehouse and auxiliary activities. Turnover in air transport have almost doubled year-on-year, but this mode of transport represents only a relatively small component of the sector. Turnover of water transport grew by almost 90%, and postal and courier service activities by a quarter.
Employment in transportation and storage increased by 2.8% year-on-year in the eleventh month of 2022, which was mainly supported by the two most important components, namely land transport and transport via pipeline by 2.7% and warehouse and auxiliary activities by 3.5 %. A rise was also recorded in small components, water transport (by 2.4%) and air transport (by 24.5%). Employment in postal and courier service activities achieved only a modest growth of 1.2%.
The average nominal monthly wage of this sector recorded EUR 1,336 in November, which represented a year-on-year increase of 9.1%. The real wage of the sector decreased by 5.5% after taking inflation into account.
