Turnover in selected sectors of economy in January 2023

In January, turnover of industry reached negative numbers, it rose by a fifth in construction

In January 2023, turnover of construction added by a record increase to the year-on-year steadily growing turnover in transportation and storage, as well as in information and communication. Turnover of industry dropped to negative values like in selected market services.

In January 2023, industry recorded a year-on-year decrease in turnover by 4.7%. Turnover of the most important sector in the structure of the economy reached negative values after eight months of continuous growth. Most of the 16 sectors of industry recorded a decrease1). The total values were most significantly affected by a decrease in turnover in electricity and gas supply by more than 23%, and in manufacture of rubber and plastic by more than 12%. Turnover also declined by one-sixth in manufacture of computer products and, to a lesser extent, in manufacture of metals. On the contrary, turnover of industry continued to maintain positive values in manufacture of transport equipment by more than 7%.

Turnover of selected market services was lower than a year ago by 7.2% in the first month of 2023. After a positive values in December, it returned to declines in the previous months. Administrative and business auxiliary activities recorded the most significant decline of almost by a quarter. In activities of smaller volume in the field of travel agencies, only a gradual return to pre-pandemic values continued, a year-on-year growth was 47%, but still lagging behind January 2020 (just before the pandemic).

After a slowdown in December, enterprises of transportation and storage again reached a dynamics in January 2023 and has returned to double-digit year-on-year growth, currently at 12.7%. All five components of this sector grew, with the most significant components in terms of volume contributing to the positive result - land transport, including transport via pipeline, as well as warehousing and auxiliary activities - both with a rise of more than 10%.

The sector of information and communication activities maintained stable double-digit year-on-year turnover growth for the sixth month in a row, in January 2023 it was by 11.5% higher year-on-year. The most significant share in the overall positive result was recorded by computer programming, as well as telecommunications, both with an increase of more than 13%.

Turnover in construction, after a three-month period of declines, recorded a positive balance in January 2023, rising by a record 20.1% year-on-year. However, this was due to a low comparable base in both January 2022 and 2021.

Development in January 2023 compared to December 2022

After adjusting for seasonal effects, turnover increased month-on-month in three of the five monitored sectors of the economy. It rose most significantly in construction by 2.3% and in information and communication activities by 1.9%. Turnover of transportation and storage grew only slightly by 0.3%. On the contrary, turnover of selected market services decreased the most month-on-month by 3.8%. Industry, as the most economically important sector of the economy, recorded a month-on-month decline in turnover of 3.8% in January 2023

Since 2022, selected market services include business entities that are classified into the divisions 68 to 82 according to the main economic activity of SK NACE. Due to decreasing the burden of the business environment, data are not available on turnover for subjects classified into SK NACE divisions 85 to 96. Turnover therefore do not include information for education (SK NACE division 85), arts, entertainment and recreation, including gaming and betting activities (SK NACE divisions 90 - 93). Also, turnover of enterprises for other activities (SK NACE 95 and 96) to which they belonged among others laundry and dry cleaning, hairdressing and beauty treatment, funeral services, well - being services and other services of predominantly personal nature.
