Turnover in selected sectors of economy in March 2022

The industry's turnover remained in positive numbers, but the high growths of the most industries were negated by a dramatic decline in car manufacturers

The core industry maintained its turnover in year-on-year growth also during March, but its dynamics slowed down significantly. However, in transportation and storage, turnover increased by almost 30% above the level of the previous year. They also increased significantly in selected market services as well as in information and communication activities. Construction has fallen into decline again.

In March 2022, turnover in industry increased by 1.4% year-on-year. The core sector of the economy has been growing for the sixth consecutive month but its growth rate has slowed significantly. Of the 16 special industry groupings monitored, a year-on-year turnover growth was recorded in 9 of them in March.

High turnover growth in selected key and smaller industries was eliminated during the third month of the year by a significant drop in manufacture of transport equipment by 15.5%. The overall positive result was most significantly affected by the growth of turnover in electricity and gas supply by 39.2%, as well as growth in metal production by 9.9% as well as in other production (including furniture production or repair engineering companies) by 19 ,4%.

Of the five monitored sectors of the economy, turnover increased the most in transportation and storage year-on-year in March, by 28.9%. The two most important components of the sector recorded a high growth, mainly land transport (including transport via pipeline), which showed a year-on-year increase in turnover by almost 39%. Warehousing and support activities rose by 22.1%.

Turnover of selected market services recorded the sharpest increase in the last three years and it rose by 19.3% in March, which represented an acceleration of growth compared to February by almost 15 p.p. The year-on-year turnover growth of one of the most important components - administrative and other business activities - by 33.2% had a significant share in such a positive development. On the contrary, real estate activities recorded a turnover decrease by 13.6%.

In March 2022, enterprises dealing with in information and communication activities achieved a higher turnover by 14%. It thus continued the 13-month growth trend, with the evolving growth rate for the fourth consecutive month. After a longer period of year-on-year growth, all components of the sector recorded a year-on-year growth.

Turnover in construction has been fluctuating for the last few months. After a significant year-on-year growth in February it dropped again in March, by 1.8%.

In a month-on-month comparison, seasonally adjusted turnover decreased only in industry, by 0.5%. It rose significantly in transportation and storage (by 15.2%), as well as in selected market services (by 13.5%). There was a month-on-month growth in information and communication activities by 1.6% and in construction by 0.2%.

Development in the first quarter of 2022

In summary, in the first quarter of 2022, turnover increased year-on-year in four of the five sectors of the economy monitored. According to the volume, the highest volumes were reached by industry, which increased by 6%, followed by selected market services with a growth by 10.1%, and transportation and storage (growth by 20.9%), as well as information and communication activities (growth by 12.5%). The turnover drop was reflected only in construction, in the three months of 2022 it dropped by 0.4% year-on-year.

Since 2022, selected market services include business entities that are classified into the divisions 68 to 82 according to the main economic activity of SK NACE. Due to decreasing the burden of the business environment, data are not available on turnover for subjects classified into SK NACE divisions 85 to 96. Turnover therefore do not include information for education (SK NACE division 85), arts, entertainment and recreation, including gaming and betting activities (SK NACE divisions 90 - 93). Also, turnover of enterprises for other activities (SK NACE 95 and 96) to which they belonged among others laundry and dry cleaning, hairdressing and beauty treatment, funeral services, well - being services and other services of predominantly personal nature.
