Retail trade in January was mainly affected by the falling turnover of hyper- and supermarkets
Year-on-year turnover increase was recorded in five out of nine components of the retail trade. Turnover of food and beverage service activities increased by almost 1.5 times, while turnover in accommodation and food and beverage service activities were close to double.
Retail turnover increased by only 0.1% year-on-year in January 2023. Turnover grew in five out of nine components of the retail trade. The most significant component of the retail trade, hyper- and supermarkets (non-specialized stores), started the year with a real year-on-year decline in turnover. Although the nominal value of their turnover increased significantly year-on-year, their value was significantly reduced (by 6%) at constant prices1) due to record inflation. The situation was similar for hobby markets, or furniture and consumer electronics stores (specialized stores with household goods), which ended up in negative numbers by 10.7% at constant prices.
The whole sector reached slightly positive numbers, mainly due to the 45% growth in turnover of fuel stores, but this result is significantly affected by increasing the number of reporting units from the beginning of 2023, which was caused by the reclassification of their main activity into retail trade.
The growth was also supported by an increase in turnover by a third in sales of computers and communication technology (specialized stores with ICT equipment) and by more than 3% in stores with shoes, textiles, drugstores (specialized stores with other goods) and also in mail order sales (sales not in stores, stands and markets).

Year-on-year development of other components of trade in January 2023
In January 2023, turnover of sale and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles reached a year-on-year growth of 20.6%, it increased (at current prices) in wholesale1) by 6.8%. They grew in 6 out of 8 components of the wholesale.
Compared to the same period in 2022, turnover in accommodation rose by 85.1% and in food and beverage service activities by 42,7%. High increases at constant prices are influenced by the low comparative base in January 2022, which was still affected by the pandemic and related measures.
