In September, freight transport decreased, however, its performance increased by a tenth year-on-year

After two months of stagnation, the performance of freight transport increased again year-on-year by 9.1%. This situation was caused by an increase in road transport. The number of passengers and transport distances in passenger transport rose, but significantly slower than in the previous months. More passengers were transported year-on-year by public transport and also by railway.

In September 2022, the total volume of freight transport year-on-year reached lower values than a year ago (18.1 million tons, a decrease by 8.3%). Similarly, the volume of traffic decreased slightly month-on-month. From a long-term perspective, the overall September performances reached a level of almost 93% of the values achieved in the corresponding pre-pandemic period (September 2019). The decrease in traffic in September was mainly caused by a decrease in railway and other transport.

A significant division of freight transport - road transport, which represented more than 70% of the transported tons of goods, rose only slightly year-on-year. Enterprises1) transported 12.8 million tons by road, which was by 1.6% more than a year ago. Starting with data from July 2022, the SOSR adjusted the monthly outputs (tables) on road freight transport2) so that freight transport parameters are reported together for all enterprises, regardless of the main subject of activity.

The volume of goods transported by rail decreased by 11.2% year-on-year, more than a sixth of the goods were transported by train.

The smallest division of freight transport in terms of share - other transport, including water, air, pipeline transport, warehouse and supporting activities for transportation, recorded a year-on-year decrease by almost 37%.

In September 2022, performance in freight transport, taking into account transport distance, reached 3.3 billion tonne kilometers (tkm), but they still did not surpass the values from the same pre-Covid period of 2019, it improved by 9.1% year-on-year.

Passenger transport was mainly affected by road transport

In September 2022, passenger transport recorded a year-on-year increase in the number of passengers for the ninth consecutive month. Their number increased by 8.7% compared to the corresponding period last year and reached 54.8 million people, which represented the second highest value in 2022. The number of passengers travelling by train increased by 14% and urban public transport transported by 11.4 % more people than last year. Road transport represents up to 88% of passenger transport.

In September 2022, performance of passenger transport, which takes into account the length of the roads, reached 823 million person-kilometres, compared to last year it was higher by more than a fifth. The high year-on-year growth was influenced by the increase in transport distances mainly in rail transport, where the number of passenger kilometers was higher by 18.3%.

Development of turnover, employment and wages in September 2022

Turnover3) of the transportation and storage was higher by 25.1% year-on-year in September. The result was mainly supported by the growth of the most important land and pipeline transport, as well as the second largest division – warehouse and supporting activities. Turnover in air transport rose almost by 2.4 times year-on-year, but this type of transport represents only a smaller component of the sector. Turnover in water transport increased almost by a half, and postal services and courier services by a third.

Employment in transportation and storage was higher by 2.6% year-on-year in the ninth month of 2022. This was mainly influenced by the two strongest divisions, i.e. land and pipeline transport (increase by 2.6%) and warehouse and supporting activities (increase by 3.9%). Significant growth was also recorded by smaller divisions; water transport (by 9.6%) and air transport (by 30.8%). Only one division of the industry, postal services and courier services, recorded a slight decrease by 0.1%.

The average nominal monthly wage in this industry reached EUR 1 182 in September, which represented an increase by 8.1% compared to the corresponding period last year. Real wages in this sector decreased by 5.3% after adjusting for inflation.

Transportation and storage for the first nine months of 2022

441.9 million people were transported by passenger transport, with a year-on-year growth by 36.1%. In rail transport, passenger transport increased by 49.2% and in road transport by 34.5%. Performance in passenger kilometers increased by 53.7%.

In the first three quarters, 173.7 million tons of goods were transported by freight transport. Compared to the corresponding period in 2021, the transport of goods decreased slightly by 0.2%. Performances in tonne-kilometers were, however, higher by 2.1%.

In transportation and storage, year-on-year turnover increased by 26.9% in the last nine months of 2022. The number of employed persons has increased by 2.4% since the beginning of the year compared to the corresponding period last year. The average nominal monthly wage increased by 7.3% year-on-year (to EUR 1 155) and the real wage decreased by 4.1%.

The data for the third quarter of 2022 has been revised and refined based on the results of the weekly survey in road freight transport.
