The decrease in real wages has already affected all sectors, employment declined only in industry

In July 2022, the nominal monthly wages, grew year-on-year, in all 10 monitored sectors, but as a result of inflation, they actually decreased. Employment increased in most sectors, but in the largest sector in terms of employment, i.e. industry, the number of employees declined the fifth month in a row.

In July 2022, preliminary data on employment, provided mainly by large enterprises, confirmed a year-on-year growth in the number of employed persons1) in 9 out of 10 monitored sectors of the economy.

The number of employed persons in accommodation increased by 12.4% in July 2022, which was the highest increase in employment among the monitored sectors. In food and beverage service activities, the number of employed persons increased by 8.3% and in information and communication by 5.5%. A lower increase in employment (up to 5%) was recorded in retail trade, sale and repair of motor vehicles, transportation and storage, wholesale, construction and selected market services. However, employment fell by 1.1% in industry, which employs the highest number of people.

In total, for the first seven months of 2022, employment increased, year-on-year, in 9 out of 10 monitored sectors, most significantly in accommodation by 11%, food and beverage service activities by 7.1% and in information and communication by 5%. A slight decrease was recorded only in industry, by 0.5%.

Development of the average wage in the SR in July 2022

In July 2022, the average nominal monthly wage2) increased, year-on-year, in all ten sectors of the economy. Wages in construction (by 11.3% to EUR 915) and in accommodation (by 10.8% to EUR 971) rose by double digits. Wages of in food and beverage service activities grew the slowest (by 1.5% to EUR 622). In industry, wages increased by 7% to EUR 1,327.

High increase in consumer prices (inflation) caused a decrease in real wages in all sectors. The most significant decline in real wages by almost 11% was recorded in the food and beverage service activities. Real wages fell by more than 8% in selected market services and wholesale, by more than 6% in information and communication and sale and repair of motor vehicles. In industry, it dropped by 5.8%.

On average, for the first seven months of 2022, the nominal monthly wage increased, year-on-year, most significantly in accommodation by 22.3% (it reached EUR 901). Nominal wages also grew by double digits in retail trade by 11.4%, construction and sale and repair of motor vehicles, both by 10.6%. The lowest nominal wage increase was recorded by selected market services by 4.7% (EUR 1,220).

Due to the high inflation from the beginning of 2022, the real wage increased very slightly in retail trade (by 0.1%) and more significantly in accommodation (by 9.9%). However, the accommodation sector records long-term low wages and is currently dealing with a labour shortage. Other monitored sectors recorded a decrease in real wages, the most significant one, more than 5%, was recorded by selected market services and information and communication.
