Retail turnover in September was already the second month lower than a year ago, for the first time of this year, the turnover of large markets was also in the red numbers

Retail turnover in September deepened their lag behind last year. After adjusting for inflation, also hyper- and supermarkets, which account for over 40% of total retail turnover, were already in the red numbers. Turnover of stores with computers and communication equipment continued in growing trend.

Even during September 2022, the turnover of retail trade were down year-on-year by 4.9%. After a long period of year-on-year increases, for the second consecutive month retail stores had lower turover than in the same period a year ago. A decrease of the turnover in constant prices1) was recorded by 7 out of 9 components of the retail trade.

The overall result of the sector was mainly influenced by the year-on-year decrease in the most significant components. Lower turnover was recorded in hyper and supermarkets by 4% and specialized stores, e.g. with footwear, textiles or drugstores by 0.8%. The turnover in retail sale not in stores, stalls or markets, which also include mail-order sale, also decreased by almost 10%.

From less significant items, a double-digit decrease was recorded by specialized stores other household equipment (i.e. hobby markets, stores with furniture and consumer electronics). For the fifth consecutive month, the real turnover of petrol stations went also down year-on-year. Although their nominal value was significantly higher than a year ago, after adjusting for extreme price growth, the turnover fell by more than 5%.

The growth of the turnover was maintained in stores with PC and ICT equipment by 24.8%, as well as in stores with food, beverage and tobacco by 1.8%.

Year-on-year development of other components of trade in September 2022

In September 2022, turnover in sale and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles increased by 5.2% year-on-year due to an 11.2% increase in turnover of vehicles. The repair and maintenance of vehicles, as well as the sale of parts and accessories decreased year-on-year.

In wholesale1), turnover increased by 9.3%, while almost all of its components rose, except wholesale on fee or contract basis.

Turnover of food and beverage service activities have been decreasing for four consecutive months. In September 2022, their year-on-year decline deepened to 13.5%. Turnover in accommodation (at constant prices) rose by 22.1%, while they have been growing for 18 consecutive months. Volume at constant prices exceeded the pre-pandemic values.

Month-on-month development in September 2022 compared to August 2022

In September 2022, compared to the previous month2), turnover increased in sale and repair of motor vehicles by 1.3% and in wholesale by 0.6%. Retail trade showed a slight decrease of 0.9%. The end of the main holiday period was reflected in a month-on-month decrease in the turnover of food and beverage service activities by 6.1% and accommodation establishments by 6.9%.

The total development for the first 9 months of 2022

In total, for the first 9 months of 2022, turnover in all components of internal trade increased. In accommodation, turnover rose by 85.4%, but still did not reach the pre-pandemic values (compared to the balance of 9 months 2019). It rose by double digits in wholesale and in food and beverage service activities. Since the beginning of the year, retail turnover have also increased year-on-year by 6.3%, and sales and repair of motor vehicles by 5.5%.
