The unemployment rate dropped to the level of 6%, the upward trend in the number of long-term unemployed continued

From April to June, the number of people without work decreased by 19 thousand year-on-year, the total number of the unemployed and the unemployment rate decreased in all regions of the SR. Up to 65% of people were out of work for more than one year.

The number of the unemployed, according to the Labor Force Survey (LFSS)1) during the 2nd quarter of 2022 decreased by 10% year-on-year and reached 169.9 thousand persons. The trend of decreasing unemployment continued for the fourth consecutive quarter. The unemployment rate indicating the share of the unemployed among economically active persons was 6.1%, year-on-year, it decreased by 0.8 percentage points (p.p.).

After seasonal adjustment, the number of the unemployed2) decreased by 3% to 172,1 thousand persons, compared to the previous quarter.

It is not possible to compare current data from LFSS over a longer time series, in 2021 the change in the new EU legislations led to significant methodological changes.3)

The majority of the unemployed, almost 111 thousand people, represented people without a job for 1 year and longer. Their number increased by 10.7% year-on-year. The share of long-term unemployed reached 65% and it was significantly higher than a year ago, when this group of people made up 53% of the total number of the unemployed. Short-term unemployment decreased by a third year-on-year, but 59 thousand persons were still out of work for less than 12 months.

During the year, there was a decrease in the unemployed in all age groups, with the exception of the age category of people before retirement (60 and over).

From the perspective of the last employer's economic activity, most people recently worked in industry, trade and construction. In these groups, however, the trend of year-on-year decrease of the unemployed continued. Until now, 48,6 thousand people had never worked, which represented a year-on-year increase by more than 10%.

From a regional perspective, the number of unemployed in the 2nd quarter of 2022 decreased year-on-year in all regions of Slovakia. Relatively the largest number of unemployed decreased in Trnavský kraj (decrease by 36.1%) and in Žilinský kraj (by 19.9%). The largest number of unemployed continued to be in Prešovský kraj (more than 45 thousand people), Košický kraj (more than 38 thousand people) and Banskobystrický kraj (more than 28 thousand people).

The highest rate of unemployment remained in Prešovský kraj (11.5%), Košický kraj reached the level of 10% and Banskobystrický kraj stopped at 9%. On the contrary, the lowest unemployment rate was recorded in Bratislavský kraj (2.1%) and Trenčíansky kraj (3.3%). The unemployment rate also decreased in all regions of Slovakia, with the most dynamic relative change in Trnavský kraj, a decrease by 2.3 p.p. to the level of 4%.

Unemployment in the first half of 2022

During the first six months of 2022, the number of people without work decreased by 9.1% year-on-year, and the number of unemployed reached 172.4 thousand people. The unemployment rate in the SR decreased by 0.8 p. b. to 6.2%. The total number of the unemployed according to the economic activity of the last employer decreased most significantly in art, entertainment and recreation as well as in accommodation and catering services. The number of people without any work experience increased by more than 10% in the first half of 2022.

  • 1) LFS methodology is in line with the international definitions and recommendations of the ILO and Eurostat.
  • 2) Unemployed persons according to the new LFS methodology valid in the EU since 2021 (IESS) are all persons aged 15 to 74 years who meet 3 criteria at the same time: in the observed (reference) week they had no paid work, they are able to start work in 2 weeks and are actively looking for work (full definition in Commission Regulation (EU) No 2019/2240). Data per sample were calculated using new integrated weights for the population adjusted for persons in collective facilities.
  • 3) Current data from the 1st quarter of 2021 are not compatible with older data of the Social Insurance Institution for pre-vious periods. In order to ensure basic information about the labor market, the indices between 2021 and 2020 were recalculated to the maximum extent possible, but not other or older data from the Social Insurance Institution.
