Employment and wages rose year-on-year, though real wages have already fallen due to inflation in most sectors

Nominal monthly wages in March 2022 increased year-on-year in all the ten monitored sectors. However, in six of them, the growth failed to keep pace with inflation and the real wages dropped. In the majority of sectors the number of the employed people has grown.

Preliminary employment data obtained mainly from large enterprises in March 2022 confirmed the year-on-year growth in the number of persons employed in 8 out of 10 monitored sectors of the economy. A more significant increase in the number of the employed was recorded in the sectors most affected by the corona crisis in the previous two years, especially in accommodation by 7.7%, in food and beverage service activities by 6.8%. Employment also increased year-on-year in information and communication activities by 4.9%, in transportation and storage by 3%, in retail trade by 2.6% or in sale and repair of motor vehicles by 2%. It also increased slightly in selected market services or in construction. Two sectors showed a decrease in the number of employed people not exceeding 1% - industry, which employs the most people by 0.7% and at the same time wholesale by 0.8%.

The number of employed persons in the first quarter of 2022 increased in 7 out of 10 the monitored industries, in two it remained at last year's level and in one industry it showed a slight decrease. From the beginning of the year to the end of March 2022, the average number of persons employed in accommodation increased by 6.4%, in information and communication activities by 4.7%, but also in food and beverage service activities by 4.3%. Industry and wholesale maintained the number of employees at the same level as last year during the first three months of 2022. The year-on-year decrease in the number of employees occurred only in the sale and repair of motor vehicles by 0.9%.

Development of the average wage in the SR in March 2022

The average monthly wage in March 2022 increased year-on-year in nominal terms in all the ten monitored activities. Compared to March 2021, wages in accommodation increased the most (by 27.2% to EUR 903). Double-digit wage growth was also recorded in sales and repair of motor vehicles (by 15.5% to EUR 1 252), retail trade (by 13.7% to EUR 937), wholesale (by 13% to EUR 1 327) and construction (by 10.1% to EUR 869). The lowest wage growth was in the sector with the highest long-term wages in the SR, in information and communication activities (by 3.6% to EUR 2 472). In the industry with the highest number of employees, wages increased by 9.8% compared to March 2021.

However, after taking into account the high growth of consumer prices (inflation), wages rose in real terms in only four of the 10 sectors monitored. Real wage growth was recorded in only three sectors of internal trade, and in accommodation. The growth by 15.2% is a reaction to the re-start after the almost complete pandemic cessation of services and also to the fact that in the long run, wages in this sector of the economy are the lowest of all sectors. Real wages dropped most significantly in information and communication activities by 6.2%, in selected market services by 2.9% and in food and beverage service activities by 1.8%.

In summary, for the first three months of 2022, the nominal monthly wage increased the most in accommodation by 26.5% year-on-year (reaching EUR 846). The lowest nominal wage growth was recorded by selected market services by 4.9% (EUR 1 206). After taking into account inflation, the monthly wage increased in real terms in 5 branches, most significantly in accommodation (by 15.7%). On the contrary, the highest decrease in real wages occurred in selected market services by 4%.
