In the summer the number of passengers was lower in public transport, with the exception of urban public transport, as well as the volume of goods in freight transport
The number of passengers during the summer holidays and at the beginning of autumn rose only in public transport. There were fewer passengers than last year in suburban and long-distance transport as well as in rail transport. In freight transport, during the 3rd quarter of 2024, the volume of transported goods decreased year-on-year, but performance taking into account transport distances continued increasing.
In freight transport, 54.8 million tons of goods were transported in the 3rd quarter of 2024, which represented a year-on-year decrease by 6.4%. The result was mainly influenced by the decrease of non-public road transport by 12.4%. This is transport carried out by companies that do not have transport services as their main business. The volume of transported goods carried out by transport companies (public road transport) by road remained approximately the same year-on-year. Volumes realized by rail rose slightly, by 4.3%. Other freight transport, which also includes pipeline transport, decreased by 16.5% year-on-year.
Freight transport performance, which also takes into account transport distances, amounted to 9.3 billion in the 3rd quarter tonne- kilometers (tkm) and compared to last year it increased by 8.1%. Average transport distances increased in both modes of transport, road and rail, the decisive factor was the increase in performance in non-public road transport.
In total, for the first nine months of 2024, 2.4% less goods were transported in freight transport than in the corresponding period of 2023. After taking into account the transport distances, the current performance was higher by 11.4% year-on-year.

The number of passengers in passenger transport in the 3rd quarter of 2024 increased by 3.6% year-on-year. The number of transported persons reached 166.5 million. The overall result was mainly influenced by the year-on-year growth in the number of public transport passengers by more than 9%. Suburban and long-distance road transport continued the year-on-year decrease in the number of passengers, currently by more than 15%. The number of passengers reached a new historical low, almost 33.2 million people. Rail transport also fared less well, the number of passengers during the summer holidays and at the beginning of autumn dropped by almost 3% year-on-year.
A positive trend in passenger transport was mainly the increase in transport distances. The indicator, which also takes into account the length of the transport - performance in passenger transport - increased by 11.6% year-on-year during the 3rd quarter of 2024. In all types of transport, passengers traveled 3.1 billion passenger kilometers. Higher performances were mainly influenced by growth in urban public transport by more than 24%, as well as growing performances by more than 11% in other road transport (suburban and long-distance transport).
In total for the first nine months of 2024, the number of passengers in passenger transport increased by 4.4% year-on-year, and under the influence of the growing average distance of transport, performance (number of passenger kilometers) also increased by 10.5%.
