Although wages rose year-on-year, they failed to keep up with the pace of inflation and recorded a real decline even in seven monitored sectors

In April 2022, nominal monthly wages rose year-on-year in all the sectors monitored, but significantly slower than inflation. They rose the most dynamically in accommodation (almost by a third). Employment rose in the majority of the sectors monitored, most notably in accommodation and food service activities. It dropped only in selected market services and in industry.

Preliminary data on employment obtained mainly from large enterprises in April 2022 confirmed the year-on-year growth in the number of persons employed1) in 8 out of the 10 monitored sectors of the economy, their number rose more significantly in accommodation by 16.5%, in food and beverage service activities by 10.3 % and also in information and communication activities by 5.1%. Employment in transportation and storage (by 3.8%), retail trade (by 3.1%), sale and repair of motor vehicles (by 3%), construction (by 1.3%) increased by less than four percent and in wholesale (by 0.9%). A decrease in the number of employed persons by 1% was reported by two sectors - industry, employing the highest number of people by 0.2%, and at the same time selected market services by 0.5%.

In the first four months of 2022, employment rose year-on-year in 8 out of the 10 monitored sectors, most notably in accommodation by 8.9%, in food and beverage service activities by 5.7% and in information and communication activities by 4.8%. The number of employees in the sale and repair of motor vehicles remained unchanged during the first four months of 2022, a slight drop occurred only in industry (by 0.1%).

Development of the average wage in the SR in April 2022

The average monthly wage2) in April 2022, rose year-on-year comparison in all the 10 monitored activities. Compared to April 2021, wages in accommodation rose the most significantly (by 29,7 % to EUR 908) and in food and beverage service activities (by 13,1% to EUR 630). A double-digit wage growth was recorded in construction (by 11.9% to EUR 896), sale and repair of motor vehicles (by 11.6% to EUR 1 229) and in retail trade (by 11.3% to EUR 944). The lowest wage growth was in the division with the highest long-term wages in the SR, in information and communication activities (by 4 % to EUR 2 276). In the industry with the highest number of employees, wages increased by 7 % compared to April 2021.

After taking into account the high growth of consumer prices (inflation), real wages rose in only three of the 10 sectors monitored, mostly in accommodation, by as much as 16%. This growth is a response to the continued re-start after the almost total pandemic cessation of services and also to the fact that in the long run, wages in this sector of the economy are the lowest of all sectors. Real wages dropped most markedly in information and communication activities by 7%, in selected market services by 5.7% and in transport and storage by 5.5%.

In total, for the first four months of 2022, the nominal monthly wage increased the most significantly in accommodation by 27.5% year-on-year (reaching EUR 862). The lowest growth of nominal wages was recorded in information and communication activities by 6.2% (EUR 2 260). After taking into account inflation, the monthly wage increased in real terms in 6 industries, the most significantly in accommodation (by 16%). Conversely, the highest drop in real wages occurred in information and communication activities by 3.4%.
