Construction rose by 1.9% year-on-year, it was in positive numbers due to the high growth of civil engineering
The growth of civil engineering works exceeded 20%. Work realized abroad, which affected the sector's performance throughout the past year, has currently fallen year-on-year. According to the type of work, there was a year-on-year increase in domestic construction including renewals and enhancements, as well as repairs and maintenance.
The volume of construction work1) in March 2022 reached a total volume of EUR 470.0 million, construction output2) increased by 1.9% year-on-year and was in positive numbers for the third month in a row. In absolute terms, this is a significantly higher volume of performance than in the last five years.
On a month-on-month basis, seasonally adjusted construction output was lower by 0.2% than in the previous month.
Output realized by domestic companies increased by 3.3% compared to March 2021 and its share in total production was more than 91%. The two most important components of domestic output - both new construction3) and repairs and maintenance - recorded year-on-year growth of up to 6%.
Within the breakdown of construction according to the production focus, the more significant construction on buildings dropped (by 3.7%), but civil engineering, which mainly includes the construction of motorways, achieved a very high year-on-year growth of up to 23.7%. Currently, work on domestic civil engineering represents almost 28% of the total construction output.
The industry's overall result in March 2022 was also dampened by work realized abroad, which dropped by 13.6% after 13 months of growth.
Construction output in total for the first quarter of 2022 reached EUR 1.1 billion and increased by 4.9% year-on-year. The output of domestic new construction3) increased by 3.5%, repair and maintenance work increased by 2.1%. The sector's performance was also improved by high growth of work realized abroad, mainly due to higher values in the first two months.
