September dissapointed the hoteliers, there were by 35 % less visitors than last year.

The number of visitors to hotels, boarding houses and other accommodation establishments in the Slovak Republic in September 2020 dropped by a third year-on-year. Domestic visitors continued to retain tourism, but with the exception of Žilinský kraj, there were fewer of them than last year. Only a third of last year's number of visitors came from abroad.

In September 2020, more than 378 thousand visitors were accommodated in the tourism facilities. The year-on-year decrease by 35,1 % was the result of the still ongoing significantly lower attendance of foreign guests, in September up to 66,3 %. Foreign customers were still missing, especially in hotels in the cities. The guests spent a total of more than 1 million nights in the establishments, their number decreased year-on-year by 27,5 %.

Last September, the number of visitors in hotels, boarding houses and other tourism facilities reached almost 600 thousand people. The number of guests in September 2020 approached the level of September 2015. The length of stay increased year-on-year, on average from 2,6 nights to 2,9 nights.

In summary, after taking into account the attendance of domestic and foreign guests, the number of visitors decreased the least year-on-year in the Žilinský kraj (by 13,7 %), mainly due to the regions of Liptov, Orava and Turiec. The most visited areas of Slovakia, the Žilinský and Prešovský kraj registered a total of almost 180 thousand visitors. In Prešovský kraj, despite having many well-known tourist attractions in its territory, the total number of visitors decreased by 23,2 %.

These two regions also had the largest number of accommodation facilities and beds in them. Room capacities here in September were used from 30 % to 40 %, while for example, in Bratislavský and Košický kraj, they were used only to more than 20 %.

The number of visitors in the whole territory of the Slovak Republic in September also consisted mainly of domestic tourists, representing 78,9 % of the total number of guests. However, their number compared to last year, decreased by 13,8 %, to almost 300 thousand. Of the eight regions, only one, the Žilinský kraj recorded more domestic guests in September than last year (by 0,9 %). In other regions, the year-on-year decline in Slovak customers ranged from 7 % to 17 %, in the Bratislavský kraj the decline reached almost 50 %.

The lower attendance of foreigners continued, whose Slovak accommodation establishments registered only 80 thousand in September 2020. In the corresponding period last year, there were almost three times as many (almost 237 thousand) which was affected mostly the city hotels.

The negative impact was most visible as well as in previous months, in Bratislavský kraj, where total number of visitors was lower year on year by 68,1 %, the number of foreign visitors here but dropped by more than 80 %. The situation in city of Bratislava itself was even worse, the overall decline in foreigners exceeded 81 %. The eastern metropolis, Košice, also suffered from a decrease in the number of foreign visitors in September (by almost 70 %), but attendance was to some extent compensated by the domestic guests. The total attendance of Košice was lower by 40,4 % year-on-year.

Extensive travel restrictions, especially at the international level, also significantly affected the total number of visitors since the beginning of the year. In the first nine months of 2020, almost 3 million visitors were accommodated in tourism establishments, which represented a year-on-year decrease by more than 40 %. Year-on-year, the number of domestic visitors decreased by almost 29 % and the number of foreigners by more than 58 %.

According to the latest data, as of September 2020, a total of 4 365 accommodation establishments served tourism. There were almost 70 thousand rooms and 183,4 thousand beds available. Compared to September 2019, the number of rooms decreased by 1,6 thousand (by 2,3 %) and the number of beds by 4,2 thousand (by 2,2 %).

Note: Statistics on accommodation establishments contain data from all legal entities and natural persons with assigned Identification Number, which are kept in the Register of Accommodation Establishments of the SO SR and provide temporary tourist accommodation.
