The number of visitors to hotels and boarding houses was higher by 14,3 % in August compared to July, although it is a 2,4 % drop compared to last August.

In August, tourist accommodation establishments in Slovakia were visited by 668 thousand people and visitors spent almost 2 million nights in accommodation establishments. Compared to the situation in the corresponding period before the pandemic (compared to August 2019), 15,7 % fewer guests visited hotels, boarding houses or other accommodation establishments. Accommodation services were used by 792 thousand people two years ago and guests spent almost 2,5 million nights in accommodation facilities.

As part of the domestic tourism, almost half of the Slovaks spent their holidays in Žilinský and Prešovský kraj. In Bratislava, more than half of the visitors were foreign clients, in the district of Bratislava I, foreign visitors represented almost 70 %.

The number of visitors in hotels and boarding houses consisted predominantly of domestic tourists with a 81 % share of the total number of visitors (538 thousand people). This is a 4,4 % increase compared to last August and a 15,4 % growth compared to 2019. Most domestic tourists visited Žilinský kraj (146 thousand people), Prešovský kraj (115 thousand people) and Banskobystrický kraj (78 thousand people). The lowest number of visits was recorded in Nitriansky kraj (35 thousand people) and Trnavský kraj (35,5 thousand people).

In August, accommodation services were used by 130 thousand foreign visitors with 331 thousand overnight stays; foreign visitors decreased by 23,2 % year-on-year. Compared to 2019, this is a 60 % drop. Most foreign guests visited Bratislavský kraj (44,8 thousand), Prešovský kraj (23,7 thousand) and Žilinský kraj (23,5 thousand). The lowest number of visits was recorded in Trenčiansky kraj (5,1 thousand people) and Nitriansky kraj (5,7 thousand people) regions.

The most visited districts were Poprad (90,8 thousand people) and the district of Liptovský Mikuláš (74,3 thousand people). Together with Bratislava (71 thousand people), they represented a third of the total August visit rate to the SR. The only district where the number of foreign visitors (27,9 thousand people) exceeded the domestic clients was the district of Bratislava I. It is also the district with the highest foreign attendance during August, followed by the district of Poprad (18,1 thousand people) and the district Bratislava II (8,6 thousand people).

In total, from January to August 2021, 1,8 million visitors were accommodated in tourism establishments, representing a year-on-year drop by almost 30,1 %. The number of domestic visitors decreased by 19,4 % and the number of foreign visitors by 57 %.
