In September, the retail turnover´s growth rate accelerated, the majority of the sector´s groups had higher turnover
Retailers recorded faster year-on-year turnover growth again in September. Hyper- and supermarkets recorded the best result this year, their turnover increased by over 6%. The pace was also more dynamic in mail-order sales, the majority of specialized goods stores maintained their turnover growth.
Retail turnover1) rose at a faster pace in September 2024 and increased by 4.3% year-on-year. However, its growth was still affected by the low comparative base last year, when the conversion to constant prices was affected by high inflation.
Year-on-year turnover in constant prices was recorded up to 7 out of 9 components of the retail trade. The positive result of the entire industry was most significantly affected by mail-order sales2) (sales outside stores, stalls and markets) with a more than a third year-on-year turnover increase. Turnover also increased by the most important hyper- and supermarkets (non-specialized stores) by 6.1%, their best performance since the beginning of the year. A favorable result was also recorded by specialized stores, e.g. footwear, textiles, drugstores or pharmacies (specialized sales of other goods) with a turnover growth by 4.4%. Turnover of specialized sales of food, beverages and tobacco, as well as the smallest component of sales in stalls and markets, rose by double digits from relatively smaller components.
On the contrary, compared to last year, sale of fuels continued to record a turnover decrease2). Turnover also dropped by 5% in specialized stores for culture and recreation goods (bookstores, sporting goods, toy stores).

Year-on-year developmentof other components of trade in September 2024
Of the other components of internal trade, the year-on-year turnover increase1) was recorded by the sale and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles by 2.5%, wholesale3) by 3.8% and accommodation by 6.8%. Turnover in the food and beverage service activities decreased by 9.1%.

Month-on-month development in September 2024 compared to August 2024
In September, turnover after seasonal adjustment rose month-on-month in wholesale3) by 3.7% and in retail trade by 1%. It dropped in sale and repair of motor vehicles by 0.7%, in accommodation by up to 18.4% and in food and beverage service activities by 2.1%.

In total for the first 9 months of 2024, turnover1) rose year-on-year in retail trade by 3.7% and in accommodation by 2.1%. Lower turnover was recorded of sales and repair of motor vehicles by 0.8%, wholesale3) by 2.3% and food and beverage service activities by 0.3%.
